Post by: jakesdad on February 12, 2014, 08:37:02 PM
For an 870 shooting the Longbeards(3" #6s)and the Win. black box 3" #6s.Any opinion/preference/experiences?

Will NOT be using any HTL from this setup so that will not be part of the equation.Lead only.Thanks.

Made quite a difference for myself. That's why I went ahead and bought both when they were on sale.

I shoot a Kicks .660 from my 870, tried the JellyHead in a couple different guns and have not been impressed.

Hello Tom Foolery,

The kicks .660 put me over 100 with the 3" HV 5's with the 28" bbl. Thanks. Trying the 21" bbl when it warms up. Looking forward to seeing what these Win LB shells will do with the kicks .655 and .660. If it's lead I stick with Kicks. Jellyhead has given me good pattern results with HTL and Nitro but the POA/POI goes way off requiring additional sights or red dot to reel it in. So much so I sold the JH chokes.

In my BPS,  have had trouble getting lead #5 to pattern above 100 @ 40 with Jellyhead, although it seems to do well with Hv-13 #6, better than about any other i have tried except Indian Creek.

Anybody - is Kicks generally considered to be better for lead as opposed to Jellyhead?? if so, Any recommendations as to Internal Diameter for lead #5  (.675, .680 maybe) ? I don't have a kicks and might consider getting one if that is the consensus.

My barrel is only 20" so I would like my Kicks to be a .650 or .655 but it has been very good in the turkey woods so I don't complain much.  :)

My Kicks .660 from a 20" 870 has shot great with these 3" shells:

100+ Win HV 5's
100+ Win HV #6's
100+ Gray Box #5's
120+ Win Gray Box #6's
160+ H13 #6
200+ H13 #7
240+ Nitro H378 4x5x7 Hevishot

All patterns @ 42yds in various weather conditions.  The 10 and 20 inch circles are nice and even and Kicks are built very stout.  I have hundreds of rounds of Hevi through mine.

Kicks website recommends .655 for 3" #6 but sounds like .660 is a popular choice for a lot on here.Sounds like .660 will give me the "tight but open" pattern I am looking for.........plenty in the 10" but enough in the 20" to give me plenty of wiggle room.

I don't have a lot of experience with the Kicks, but the one I have and the ones I have seen have all throw some very even patterns. I don't think you could go wrong with either choke.
