Title: Purple heart over Poplar
Post by: AU86 on January 30, 2014, 02:41:25 PM
Anyone ever tried a purple heart over poplar box call. I was wondering what you would think about the wood combination and type sound?

I have a purple heart over mahogany that sounds very good.  Purple heart over most soft woods is a good combination.  Purple heart lids tend to give raspy tones.

I've done several purpleheart over poplar long boxes. Great combination of soft and hardwoods.

I have a purple heart over soft maple for the SS boys that ROCKS!!! Skeeterbait is dead on... purple heart is "generally" a touch more raspy.

My favorite box I ever made was a purpleheart lid on a heart poplar box in the Neil Cost style. It's the box I have used for several seasons now. I have not seen this combo many times, but it worked for me. I wished I knew how to post a picture of it but I don't. Give the combo a try. You will probably like it. Purpleheart works on many different woods.

There is no reason this combo won't work, presuming all things are done well, having said that it might take a few tries till you get the weight right, but I would agree with others that it will likely tend to be raspy, but you can control that with how you tune it.  Have fun and let us know how it works out.
