Title: My gun & your thoughts about lead.
Post by: Fox Fire on January 19, 2014, 02:50:02 PM
Have been think'n about going back to lead shot for the last couple years, as is my gun (870 pump SPS) is set up for HS with a Indian creek .665, a Jelly head 660 (also the factory Rem extra full turkey choke that never got used).

Will these cokes throw a good pattern with lead or are there other chokes for this gun that will do better ??

Both the Indian creek and jelly head should do good with lead..

Both the Indian Creek and the JellyHead should work well. I'd recommend trying the new Winchester LongBeard shells if you can get your hands on some.

X2 Definitely worth a try :icon_thumright:
Two of the best 12 gauge lead chokes for me have been in the 660-670 range and shells preferred now are Federal FC in #5s and 6s, Winchester Red and Black shell,5&6, for hunting the woods.
For very short barrels I have had better results with 655 chokes. Now I am thinking about my shortest barrel, 18.5 inches and a 665 or so choke with the new Win LB XR shell in #6s but only shooting will tell.
So to answer your question you have adequate chokes for lead and distances of 40 yards and under in your possession. Know your distances and patterns and you are set.

Any paticulars on the winchesters as far as shot & length of the shell that mite be a good place to start with the patterening  ?

I have an 870 special purpose with a 23" and it shoots really well with a jellyhead .665 and Winchester 3.5/2/5's. Also have an 870 SM with 28" barrel that likes the same choke and load.

I have found an Indian Creek .665 to be a good choke with all turkey loads.

Your search will be to find your best shell.  Your best choices are:

Winchester Long Beard
Winchester High Velocity
Winchester XX
Winchester Super X

Federal Turkey Thugs (Were only available at Wal-Mart last year)
Federal Blue Box

you can not go wrong with the Winchester XX Magnum 3" #5 or 6
one,if not the best turkey shell ever made.

Really appreciate the info guys, I was kind of concerned since I bought the chokes for hevi shot they mite not work so good with lead, I have some Win turkey loads but not exactly sure which ones, ther probably not the same as ya'll suggested, since the one I have are about 5/6 years old.

Gonna keep my eyes peeled for some thugs & the new Winchesters, be nice to find the right shell/choke combo right off the bat, but it dont usually work that way for me.

My turkey shells are over 6 years old, Winchester supreme #5 (black shell) I have a 870 spst and a 870 supermag both shoot Briley .665 straight rifle chokes.  Both patter 100% turkey killers at 40 yards.  I just got a SX3 and it had a .655 extended choke in it.  For 5's I felt better ordering the Briley in a .665 rifle. I have a couple boxes of Long beard I am going to try to pattern it along with winchester supreme's.  Years ago the only winchester shell that would pattern with my guns was the supreme 3" and 3.5"  I am looking forward to testing the long beard.  Also I read somewhere that .660 to .670 chokes were best for #5's.
