I'm going to work in northern alabama in the Birmingham area. Are there many wma's around there where a fellas could try his hand at a spring gobbler! Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
Welcome to Birmingham. There are good WMAs here. I have only ever hunted St. Clair WMA (which is sadly closed now), and Choccolocca which is my favorite. Choccolocca is in Heflin, between Birmingham and GA state line along I-20. Shoot me a PM when you get to town and maybe we could get a hunt setup. Where are you from?
Yes, any turkeys in Alabama are North of Birmingham. I've heard good things about Choccolocca.
Go to Oakmulgee if you want to stay away from the crowds or get away from the interstate at chocolocco. Chocolocco has been covered up with people close to hwy 78 the past few years. Do your homework and get to the woods early the day after you find a gobbling turkey. If you don't somebody else will. If someone beats you in the woods then just go somewhere else. Over the past few years I have had people park right next to me and try to slip in on the turkey I am hunting. Folks seem to have less and less courtesy for their fellow hunters. I have hunted turkeys on chocolocco for over thirty years. Sometimes they are gobbling like crazy and then other times there is nothing. You then go to Oakmulgee, hollins, or coosa and they will be gobbling like gangbusters. Who knows what makes them do that. Don't forget Cahaba WMA, that place is full of turkeys and close to Bham. It's thick, rough and full of cotton mouths as well.
Hunting Alabama is on my turkey hunting bucket list!! Lord will it will happen one day in the near future!
God Bless

You get ready to come down bro. Hit me up and I will put you on a gobbling turkey. Maybe someday you can do the same for me in Va.
