Title: 20 inch barrels.
Post by: SumToy on November 13, 2013, 08:36:34 AM
What are some of the numbers yall see out of the 20 inch guns.

I test a two 20 inch 870's  and think the patterns are nice just don't know the numbers are good.

3 inch mag blends 170 temp was 65.  Never cleaned the gun at all.   This the one that I don't know about.  Guy said it had never been over 150.  I have seen the blends go 200 but in the long barrel guns.   I know the Mag Blends are up/down with the numbers.

Next was 31/2 7's.  268 that I could count.  Now I give and don't take on my numbers.(I know it is a shot if count.)

Now did find both shells like same size choke but different lay out on inside of choke.

That said I HOPE more of you ask me to test 20 ga from now.  Them new short barrel Remington will thump you.   :TrainWreck1:

Both liked the 650 rang choke just different internals.    The 665 rang that has put the big numbers the last few was not that good in the short barrels.

I'm shooting an Remington 870 SPS-Super Mag Predator 20" barrel. I like to shoot 3" and was thinking of trying 3" Hevi-Blends.

I noticed you mentioned they both liked the 650, and on your website your recommendation list shows 660,670 for the 870 shotgun.

My question is, considering the 20" barrel, where do you reccommend starting (choke wise) if Hevi-Blend 3" is the shell of choice.  650?  660?

I realize that every gun shoots different and YMMV but I'm just looking for an expert opinion on what would be your choice of starting points choke wise considering the info above.  My funds are limited at the moment. :(

WVHill This is one of the new SPS Super Mag turkey/predator guns also.  Now in the past the guys have has 24 to 28 inch barrels.  They would put good numbers from 650 to 670.  I just like the look of the patterns out the 660 to 670.

Now the 20 inch just would not shoot with the bigger chokes. It would kill birds no problem at 40 yards but I was looking to see if I could find big numbers.

In our chokes I would run a 650 St-15 with the Mag Blends.

Now one thing I would like to see is how the short barrel will do if we cut the cone out on it.  I think it would help the recoil and drop some of the back pressure.

In my 835 with 20 inch barrel and mag blends it shoots 200 or a little better with hevi 676 choke you are right about one thing the recoil from a 20 inch barrel is violent, much worse than my 24

Would love to see the results if you cut the cone out.

Thanks for the reply also!

Was this 3 or 31/2 inch.   Now the 835 has the big back bore and this goes back to the less back pressure.

Hi, I would like to see results on forcing cone work on a Rem 870 SPS Turkey/Predator gun with a twenty inch barrel. My gun shoots great at 30yds with the factory choke .670. I shoot 3" heavy 6's and at 30 and 40yds dead turkeys. I like the 20" barrel for ease of handling in a set-up. No getting caught in branches less trimming and more hunting. The recoil is a thumper and the foring cone work lessen recoil and not destroy patterns?

I got to check with the customers to see.  Both the guns belong to someone.  Now they both will rock your world when you light the fuse.  :z-dizzy:

The  cone will help with the recoil one it.  I think it will help the pattern with the some what opening the bore up on the gun.   Short as the barrel it is almost like a 1/2 back bore.  lol

Let me dig through my notes from this past spring. But in pretty sure I was pushing 200 with 3" MagBlends from a 870 Express Magnum!

Found this one! 209 with the 3"MagBlends from a 870 Magnum with the .662 Hevi Choke

I've got more using a .660 Jelly Head somewhere.

Keep me informed.  I have the same gun and I'll be building that same load.  Gotta get with William to get a choke for it.
