Title: Bad Year For Ticks
Post by: njdevilsb on October 06, 2013, 11:02:04 PM
I shot a crotch horn with my bow here in upstate NY on friday night.  We found one tick on him on the surface when we got back with him.  He hung for roughly 36 hours and this afternoon we dropped him off to be made into sausage etc and when we loaded him in the truck, we couldn't believe the amount of ticks.  We counted 15, 14 of which came from one side of his head, up by his ear.  I know some areas of the country have them bad like this every year, but that is unheard of for here.  If we saw 2 on them in years passed, that was alot.  We had heard that they were going to be bad this year with the spring we had, but that was crazy.  I ended up having one crawling up my arm from loading him.  I got bit by one last summer while checking trail cameras but found it quick enough that it didn't get far in.  Of all things in the woods, ticks worry me the most and I don't like messing with them.

I forgot to spray my clothes with permethrin before our spring trip this year.  Wound up with about 20 tick bites this year. :help:
I haven't been bitten in several years before that.  They were particularly bad in KS.  Looks like I skated on illness from them tho.

They seem to thrive in our warm and humid air here in Southern Illinois. Lyme Disease has been reported in most counties here. Bad critters.

Thanks,
Clark

Had 23 on me in August after I worked on some deer stands and shooting lanes.  Of course that was the day that I didn't take my usual tick precautions.  Dummy!

Personally, I've never seen a "good" year for ticks...

I hate those little bugs!
