(Written that same day) I woke up this morning around quarter to three, and got ready. I was picked up by Willard (MarkMartinFan), and we drove to our spot. We met up with Paul (Droptine), and we went in turkey heaven. Willard split up with me and Paul, so we went opposite directions, hoping to hear a gobble. About seventy yards down the trail, we stopped and hooted, nothing we can hear. We walked twenty more yards, and I hooted, we got a faint gobble, but wasn't really sure, so I hooted one more time to make sure. Yeah........that's a gobble! We walk down to the trail while hooting a few times, and this bird is fired up. Good bird too. In a nutshell guys, we turned the trail, and to the left of it, is a swamp. He's roosted right on the edge, and as we walked down, the gobbles faded. Dag Gommit! He saw us. We then met up with Willard, who hasn't heard anything on the other side. As the sun was rising fast, we were still dissapointed about that big ol' gobbler spotting Paul and I. We then go to the other side of the property, hoping to get this bird later on. We walk, and walk, and walk. Nothing. It's about ten after seven, and we go back to the beginning..........
We split up again. Minutes later, Willard calls, Derek I got one gobbling. I run to where he is, and Paul meets me at the spot he's gobbling. We set up, and Paul shimmies behind a blow down. This bird was closing the distance FAST!
At about 7:20, I see his big ol' body walk out of the brush. This bird put on such a struttin' show for me. All I see is his beautiful rounded fan, with his red, white, and blue head tucked in. At about twenty five yards, the woods around us experienced the sound of a huge gobbler hitting the dust. This is the biggest bird I've ever taken. The pictures of the turkey rug mount will be in another thread! Check them out ya'll! (Named: My turkey rug #1, #2, and #3)
Paul, Willard, thank you for being there for me. You truly are role models.
