Title: Bent Mossberg 935 barrel
Post by: KYStalker on June 26, 2013, 10:51:34 PM
I was polishing the bore of my slightly used, new to me, 935 tonight, and as I admired the shine afterwards, I noticed that my barrel appears to bent slightly upwards.  I'm really hoping that it's a weird optical illusion, but I think it really is bent slightly upwards.  Has anyone else ran into this or heard of it?  I did a search on yahoo and found a few others that were complaining of the same thing on other forums, only to have Mossberg send them a new barrel that was slightly curved upward also.  Was it maybe a bad run or something?  I'm going to still pattern the gun, and if it patterns well I won't worry about it.  We're talking a small curve, but enough to notice when you look.  Will post pictures tomorrow.

were you polishing it with cialis.
LOL

All kidding aside i have heard of this a few times not necessarily with mossberg but I have heard people straitening a barrel against 2 trees. Not a joke.

How could you possibly bend a shotgun barrel between two trees?  Just trying to bend it alone would be insane much less trying to get it back to straightness.

I can't see it. The way those Mossberg 935 and 835's barrels are made, it looks like they are not straight, imo. Pattern it with low profile front and rear sight's and if it shoots straight, it ain't bent. If it is, your still in good shape. Mossberg has a ton of replacment barrels.

Tough to tell.
If it patterns well, the POA & POI are the same, or can be corrected with adjustable sights... I would run it.

Shine a strong light down the barrel if its straight the light coming out should be perfectly round...sounds good in theory at least??

As has been said, I'd "deep clean" the bore and then patten it. If it shoot to POA, it will be fine.

Thanks,
Clark

Patterned it the other day with 2 3/4 loads to test where it's shooting and it shoots super high.  I've got the Truglo magnum gobble dot pro series sights on it and I've got the rear sight as low as it will possibly go in order to hit where I'm aiming.  The rear fiber optic sight sits so low that the front of the sight ramp almost obscures the front sight in the sight picture.

Sure sounds like a bent barrel.  Some gunsmiths will bend them for you, even with a rib.  If you decide to go that route, look for a gunsmith that works a lot with trap shooters.  It is not that uncommon for trap shooters to have their barrels bent to shoot high on purpose.  You just want to go the other way.  They are really not that hard to bend.

Bent barrels can be usually be detected by looking down the inside of the barrel against a bright background.  A really straight barrel will show concentric rings all the way to the muzzle.  A bent barrel will show rings squished in one direction.

That's how I originally saw there was a problem.  I was looking down the inside of the barrel after polishing it, and noticed that the reflection was distorted on one side.  Then when I looked at the outside I noticed what I thought was a slight upward bend.  I think I'm going to take it to a Mossberg dealer and probably end up sending it off.

I recently sent my new 935 in for service at the Maverick Service Center (Mossberg)  in Eagle Pass, Texas...they sent the gun back to me repaired in just a few days.   Mine was new and a Warranty Fix.   I sent the gun down to them in original factory box and got it back in same box (with a plain cardboard outer box around it) ...I liked that.

I e-mailed them first...they answered about a day later...not bad.  They did say if gun is not new they will contact you with repair costs prior to performing repairs.

KY - The barrel on my 835 is also bent upward and I assumed it was that way by design. Mossberg ribs are flat compared to others that have ramps at the rear. Presumably instead of a ramped rib, their barrels are bent/tuned upward to compensate; both would have the same effect of raising the POI relative to the line-of-sight. An easy way to see a bent barrel is to clean the bore shiny and sight through it toward a bright window with muntins. Centered on crossed muntins, they will reflect through the bore at 12, 3, 6 & 9 o-clock and any curves in the reflections will show the axis and direction the barrel is bent. If yours shoots too high after adjusting your rear sight all the way down, try raising the front sight. Try the factory bead for a front sight if it's higher than the Truglo and see where that gets you. Also try sighting with the rib alone and see how it does. I sight my 835 with just the rib and two beads. With the loads/choke/patterns and range I'm accustomed to, I feel like I can be accurate enough within and out to 40 yards. I don't really like the extra gear mounted on top when I'm turkey hunting; just my preference. (I modified this message to remove some dimensions I recalled innaccurately and to make it a little more clear). Good  luck with your barrel.

I have a mossy 535 and I believe the barrel is bent as well.... it patterns great! But my POA and POI differ by like 8"s the factory fiber optics that came with it wouldn't even adjust far enough. I had to put a red dot on it. But I really want to shoot something besides a red dot.
I've killed plenty birds with it and love it, but it just bothers me knowing that my POA is the way it is.
It shoots high and right 8" about 2 o'clock.
I bought it new from Academy 4 years ago.
It's the mossy 535 tactical turkey thug.
I contacted mossberg after weeks of trying and finally I had enough patients to be on hold for 45 minutes to be able to finally speak with someone and they hadn't heard of any issues of their guns shooting high.
Pretty much I would have to send it to them and they would look into it. But it was the week before turkey season and I needed a gun.......... lol
Now I have another turkey gun so I think I'll be mailing the barrel to mossberg and won't have to worry about them having for a month or so......
