Title: New 870 SM 26" Barrel Choke Shell Combo Question
Post by: taylorjones20 on March 20, 2013, 02:57:46 PM
Hi everyone, new to the forum.  I purchased a new 870 SM earlier this year and I would like to know if anyone else has the new SM and what kind of performance you are getting out of it.. ?

I have a Jelly Head .660 and I have shot the Hevi Magnum Blends 5-6-7 and got 150 hits in 10" circle at 40 yards.

I read on Nitro Company that these guns are finicky and they have trouble getting a consistent pattern...

Anyway, anyone out there got one of these (2011 or newer) and getting a good pattern?

Thanks!

That's pretty low for a 3 1/2 Magblend with that choke.  The first thing I would do is polish your barrel according to the sticky above and re-shoot.  Most 870 SM's love the JellyHead .660, but not all, but you need to get that barrel looking like a mirror and then you can evaluate that choke.

Clean the barrel and shoot HEVI #7's through that JH .660 choke... you should be spot on then.

I would ditch the Jelly head and buy a Haymaker .670 made by Indian Creek.  You will get much better patterns.

I had this same gun 2 years ago and shooting both the 3" and 3.5" Hevi 7's thru a Jellyhead .660 consistently put close to 300 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards.   :OGturkeyhead:

That's what I'm looking for!  I will polish the barrel and try the Hevi 7's

Thanks

My 870 with .660 shot the 3.5 7s pretty good. Just a clean barrel. Don't remember the count but I do know it was well over 250.

I've got the same gun, 26" barrel and 660 JH.  I shot mine the other day in 40 degree weather using 3 1/2" Hevi #6's.  I was consistently getting around 225 in a 10" @ 40.

We will find out shortly how good this Thug ammo really is.  I'm gonna have to see for myself what the 835 and the Star Dot will do with this stuff.

And for the record my 870 28' barrel didn't do what I call well with either of the Jelly Head chokes.  They shot some turkey kill patterns at 40yds no doubt.  But they sure didn't live up to all the hype that folks are saying about them either.  I have found other chokes that would light the Jelly Heads up.

Heck the Rem Ventilator .655 out shot the Jelly Heads in my barrel by a lot.  And you can buy this choke for $24 shipped to your door.

I have had similar results with the JH chokes that ILIKEHEVI-13 has,  my gun prefers IC .665 while my brothers likes Pure Gold .670.  It is very expensive shooting Hevi shot with this choke and that choke to find the magic combination, but eventually you will find the right combo,  keep us updated what works out for you.

Mine shoot the 7's the best out a MAD Super Max .675 choke.  I also have a Pure Gold .670 that shoots them well.  The best Indian Creek BDS choke that I tried out of the 4 that Mike and Stuart let me try was a .669 choke.  I should of kept that choke.  But it still would'nt out shoot the Super Max which was made by Indian Creek as well.

Now remember this is 3" 2oz #7's and not 3.5" 2.25oz loads which have more shot.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I just got my Hevi #7's in and I am going to have to wait for the weather to warm up a bit.   Hopefully tomorrow I can post some pics of my pattern.

Good luck.

If that Jelly Head don't work out for you, don't forget what I said about the .655 Ventilator choke.

You should be looking at around 300 shot in a 10" at 40yds with the right choke.  Maybe more or maybe a little less, but 300 should be obtainable if you do your homework and experiment with chokes.  Make sure to draw you 10" and 20" circles after the shot.  Pick the densest part of the pattern.  I have 10" glass cut outs that makes this so much easier and I can see through them so I know I'm getting the densest part of the pattern in the 10.

Get that barrel mirror clean and dry and you will probably like what you see.

My 870sm with 26" barrel didn't like the JH .660 with Hevi #6's or the JH .665 with MagBlands...... got my best performance with IC .665 and MB's.

If my 870 didn't like the JellyHead, the Indian Creek .665 would be my next choice.  Bad Grizz speaks truth!

I shoot a Kicks GT .655 in my 870 SM with the Win. ER 3.5" 6s and average around 200 in the 10 @ 40. I shoot a IC BDS .665 in my 1187 with Hevi 6s and Blends and have great patterns. Neither gun likes the others choke very much tho. My 870 doesn't like Hevi 3.5 at all. Just goes to show how finicky 2 barrels that are almost identical can be.

Thanks to everyone who commented and suggested ideas.  I cleaned the barrel (deep clean) - Have not yet ordered everything to polish the barrel.  Anyway, I shot today with the Hevi 7's and was extremely happy with the results.  I got 344 hits in the 10 at 40 yards!!

What a huge difference the deep clean and the #7's have made!

I am now confident and ready for season to open in the morning!

Again, Thanks everyone!

That's super! I've got an older version of what you're shooting (2003). I use a Truelok .650 PH choke, I get 180-200 with the Hevi #7 and 140-150 with Fed HW #7.

Here you go guys.  I recounted without counting the rips where multiple shot went through and came up with 336.  Sorry for being off on 8 with the first count.  My POI is off on this shot but I think it was my reaction to the kick because it was on all the other times I shot it...

Thanks again for everything!
