Title: patterning help PLEASE
Post by: offshore on March 08, 2013, 04:05:42 PM
The gun is a Benelli M1 super 90 with 26' barrel. the first shell i shot was a hig brass dove load out of a rhino choke at 20 yards to make sure the POI was correct, it was dead center. back up to 40 yards - rhino choke, nitro 4x5x7 shells shot is 12" low. maybe its me, shoot again--same result. swap chokes to pure gold, same nitro shell--same result, 12" low. maybe it't the shell? rhino choke, 4x5x6 mag blend shells--same result 12" low. pure gold choke, same mag blend shell--12" low. At this point im convinced its the blended shells causing the 12" low POI. I had 2-winchester straight 5's. i put a factory modified choke in and shot 1 of the winchester straight 5's--pattern was on the bullseye. im thinking ive narrowed it down now. i put the pure gold choke tube in and shot the last winchester 5's--12' low. i really dont know where to start or what could be the problem. i tried with rifle sights, with just the bb on the barrel and the same result. i ran out of shells so i had to quit, but my only option that i can see now is moving the entire rear rifle sight up the barrel towards the front one. to make sure it wasnt me messing it up, i had 2 different people shoot and the same result--12" low.

Red dot or scope. You will never look back

X2 on the scope, I use a Simmons pro diamond. They're under a hundred bucks and hold zero great, and the diamond reticle helps verify shooting distance...

wow... I'm sure you did but, Did you make sure your barrel cap screw was tight? Try the factory Mod. and Full with the blend load's and see if that makes an difference. It could be the way the barrel was threaded. put the extended choke in and check to see if its tru "with a straight edge" to the barrel.

Factory mod choke with 5's was straight down the pipe. Pure gold with 5's was 12" low

Hummm. The only thing I can think of is just making sure the barrel cap is super tight. If its not that, then maybe something with the threads .

I would agree about the threads, barrel nut being loose, etc. but if any of those were the case, why would a factory choke with the same shell shoot straight as an arrow?

This is what I would do. Deep clean the barrel. Make sure the barrel and choke is very snug. Pick the best choke load combo as far as #s in a 10 inch circle. Then pattern at 20 with my hunting combo. Check poi and adjust sights if needed. Then I'd clean the barrel , check and make sure its tight and the choke is tight. Move it to 30 and repeat. Move to 40 and repeat. Now I know its going to get pricey but that's how Id do it. If that doesn't work then I have no clue. Good luck and let us know if you get er figured out.

i shot again today and all is well now.  i removed the front truglo sight and am now shooting the rear truglo sight and factory front bead.  i also changed to heavy 6's as well as heavy 7's with the 7's doing a touch better.  at 30 & 40 yards the ten ring is now full and if i miss, its now on me!!
