Barrel length dont have alot to do with it. Now long barrel puts up a few more numbers but how dead is dead. LOL
You can kill him at 40 with Fed HW or Hv-13.
Modern day 20 gauges with the correct choke and shells....FED 7s or TSS have plenty to give you a murderous pattern at 40. They still also have plenty if you misjudge the distance and it's a little further.

Check out the weatherby sa08 20 ga. There are a lot of topics of the weatherby sa08 vs Mossberg SA20. The weatherby seems to be the winner between the two. I like mine.
