Title: OK Bass Pro has gotten the Last of MY MONEY.
Post by: HogBiologist on February 07, 2011, 02:27:04 PM
Went to Bass Pro today to see the gun I am about to buy.  I have been checking around to find a good deal on it.  BPS $369, McKinney Honda in Ruston $349, Cabelas in Gonzolez $329.  Ok, cabelas is to far to drive.  BPS and ruston are about the same distance.  I asked the gun guy if they still had the gun there.  Yep, but it was in the 26" barrel not the 28".  Now comes the part that has put a damper on my day.

-Can Yall order the 28" barrel?
Well, we could.  Usually we get what stoger sends us.  It is just too difficult to order stuff.
-Do yall price Match?
Yes, Just depends on where
-Well I found it at Ruston for $$$ and Cabelas for $$$
We wont match cabelas.

That just ticked me off royally.  I was about to put in an order for the gun right there so it would be there when Obama gave me my money back.  But no, he couldnt be bothered to order it.  "It is difficult".  I didnt mind the not matching Cabelas, but he was very rude and did not seem to care about why he was working there.  Not to mention they dont carry Hevi Shot H13 3"-2oz-anything.  I can find almost as much stuff there as I can at Academy or Walmart (usually cheaper at the latter two).  I think I will call TP in West monroe and see if they can help out.  I may just end up going to Ruston, or hoping I have to go to Baton Rouge for work soon.  Bass Pro will no longer get my business.

Yes it has something to do with BPS having a national gun buyer and the stores have little to no input into what the buyer buys.  Not a great thing but the guys at the stores are not the problem.  If a BPS store has a gun you want fine.  But don't try to order one.  You will not know when or even IF you will ever receive it.

I have run into this before. I called BPS's main office. After a little talking to, they matched the price.

Go to their website and complain to them on there. I did that last year after dealing with a bunch of kids at our store. I got a phone call from the store manager in about 20 minutes

Big box stores are extremely limited on what they can order.  They're pretty much stuck with what they've got.  Look at Budsgunshop.com.  That's where I ordered my 835 turkey/duck combo and it was by far the cheapest I found.

Just got off IM with a rep.  She said give them 72 hours to respond.

BPS should match the money!

They are shooting you a line of B.S. I would ask to speak with a manager on the price matching. I know for a fact that they match Cabela's prices, I do it all the time in the Denham Springs store. Although I also get the same Smart A$$ vibe from some of the employee's. And you got to remember bigger isn't always cheaper. I was in the market for one of the new Horton Vision crossbows last Sept, so I went to BP and shot one and got a total price (I want to say $834 after tax) then checked Cabela's, (same price) then checked at 2 little mom & pop archery shops. The crossbow and the exact same package was a little over $200 cheaper.

Those big box stores have their upsides and their down sides

You need to know how to manipulate the upside
AND
Avoid the downside

Always ask to speak to the mananger if you are not sastified with the response that the person at the counter gives you.
Do not be a prick but politely ask for the mananger, they need your business and should want you happy.
That goes for all stores,
Sometimes they cannot do anything but they want to know the problem that you have.
If you think there is a problem they want to know (or should).

i had a problem with bp myself about 7 months ago, i ordered a bell and carlson stock for my savage 110 30-06 off the online store because they had the best price. i got it and they sent me the stock for the short action instead of the long action, so i said... "ok, stuff happens, not a big deal, ill just call them and send it back for an exchange for the right one" not so easy, i called, and after checking my order invoice and the shipping invoice they said that i was wrong and that they sent me the right stock... at that part i started to get a little aggitated, and i talked to a manager. he ended up being a tool and didnt want to help me either. i then filed a formal complaint and talked to the managers boss and all he would do is refund my money, so i took my money and ordered a boydsgunstocks and got a ross thumb hole sporter style stock and haven't been a patron to bass pro since.

Exactly why I will NOT make a purchase like yours at any retail box store.

:anim_25: getting what you want there -- if their purchasing department couldn't get the item in bulk and at discount, forget about them ordering you want you want.

I stick with my local bow and gun shop, he's always cheaper than anything around, and its ALWAYS exactly what I am looking for, with top notch customer service.

My point has nothing to do with supporting the local guy kind of thing -- I know what I want and I will not suffer having to deal with box stores to only end up settling for something close.

I wanted to get a pair of Danner Snake Boots. I called  BPS and asked about them. They didn't have any in stock but after alot of grief they told me they would order one pair in and thats all. I would also need to put a deposit. If it didn't fit oh well. Poor service didn't really seem to care whether they got my business or not. They didn't! I called Cabelas they told me they would order in up to 5 different sizes so I could try them and pick the ones I wanted. I bought them at Cabelas.

I have had bad luck at Bass Pro as well on several occasions. I have asked where some thing was located and received the "point" with no reply. I have asked questions about a product and received the "I don't know".  It is hard to get help in their store.

Found it at a local mom and pop for 5$ more than the cabelas price.  They are only 20 minutes from me and the guy was nice.  No BS or jive talk.  AWSOME.

I am pretty fortunate to have a Sheel's close by.   :happy0064:

If I want something they can get it, and the guys and gals that work in each department know their stuff. There is a Gander in the same town and I can't remember the last time I tripped over junk in their isle and tried to talk to the college kid about a product he had no idea about.  I feel sorry for you Southern guys that don't have a Sheel's around and if you ask me you can keep those BPS stores down there.

Like most retail outlets you get a variety of salespeople, some good  & some bad. As some have said, if you ever are dissatisfied, take it to the  person, who generally cares, and that's the general manager. I've had to many times over the years. and almost always got satisfaction. IF that fails I go to the head office. I will say, I've NEVER had an issue with Cabelas, and I feel their staff is better trained in customer relations than most.

I actually bought a 12ga 870 barrel from our BPS in Denham Springs and they did a price match from Cabelas online store without a hitch.

Yeah alot of the stores Like BPS have national buyers and dont listen to the local guys input. My brother used to work for Dicks sporting goods in the Hunting department (Lodge) and some of the stuff he asked them to get, (knkowing what his customers were looking for) They never would however when one of the new bow companies offered a great deal on a hunting bow??? the finish was a Bright reflective silver. ( The buyer jumped on them ) Needless to say the bow was a competition model and finally was either returned from lack of sales or discounted highly to try and sell them. He had stuff like that happen often

I agree. Cabelas has always did me right. There is no store close by but I have stuff shipped. They are fast on their shipping too.

The only two "Big Boxes" which I routinely buy from are Cabelas and LL Bean.  Both of these have the best customer service in the industry and will do whatever it takes to satisfy the customer.   With that said, I try, whenever possible, to utilize the locally owned stores even if it means paying a little more.

I have a local BPS in my town.  The thing that irritates me the most is when BPS puts something on sale in the catalog the local store will not honor the catalog price.  But one thing they do that I appreciate is anything I mail order and want to return, the store will take the return.

I have a Scheels, BPS, Gander and Cabelas near by...by far Scheels has the best customer service, however, firearm $ are ridiculous...So I use a private FFL in the county I live in...he is 15 min away and I have always gotten EXACTLY what I wanted as far as firearms.  Very reasonable $ as well...no overhead BS to deal with like with the large outlets...

I'm also a litte fed up with BPS...last year I was looking for Hevi 13 in a #7, I called them and they said they had them in stock, I had other things on the list to get so the hour drive was justified...or so I thought.  I get there and I ask where to find what I needed...also got the finger point, in that direction, without a response...found the ammo section and guess what...no #7's.  I asked the kid who was working that area and he was clueless.  I recognized his name from our phone conversation from a few hours ago and called him on it.  He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.  I then complained to the manager and he was like....SO....I left and heven't spent a dime there since.

Love Scheels.  They have ordered what I wanted, returned boots due to manufacturers defect, gave me a 'free' hat and t-shirt, shipped things from other stores to my home, and overall customer service is excellent.

Gander Mountain?  They watch me walk by.  They tell me that I don't want 6's and instead want 5's.  Is that because that is all you have on the shelf?  Have you researched the performance with the 5's on my gun and choke?  They sit around talking to each other or having 3 reps on 1 customer who doesn't even buy anything when I'm waiting to actually buy something.  Plus, their gear costs more then other places.

Nashville BPS had the same poor customer service so luckily my local mom and pop matched their price on my new 835! :thanks:

Was in Bass Pro 2 hours ago standing at the "Customer Service" counter to ask a question about a Jellyhead choke. The little kid told me I had to go back to the shooting section to ask my question. He woulddn't call back for me, so I left. I was on the phone with the manager befor I even left the parking lot. We'll see where that will go.

If it's not too far for you to drive, try Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop. About 30 minutes north of Monroe. They have a big gun selection and are alway helpful. I hate going to BassPro.

I will tell you this I have never had better customer service than at Cabelas.  I have had items that I've worn in the field for two years replaced no questions asked.   To me,  I would go the extra distance and order from them. :anim_25:

Found where I am getting my gun at.  There is a place in Homer Louisiana.  It is a Mom and Pop place.  I will go up there Monday hopefully to fill out the Forms for the background check (I think that is what he ment by FBI forms).  There will be a 30ish day wait for the gun to come in, but I am OK with that.  Total price is gonna be $335 plus tax.  Not a bad deal.  I put my hands on the 26" barrel the other day and when I lift it to my eye it goes to a good sight picture.  I am getting excited.  Now I just need to find chokes for it.

I went to BPS yesterday and was very disappointed. Everything is over priced and customer service was lousy. I purchased 3 shotguns and a rifle from them the past 4 years, no more.

I have never had good luck with Gander Mountain customer service.  What i really hate is as soon as you walk in the door there are a few people on you asking if you want a credit card but if you ask where something is they never know.  Oh well I just dont go there anymore.  I grew up next to the original Dick's store when they were a hunting and fishing store. Their employees knew what they were talking about and were more than happy to help.  I guess now if you like golf its a good store.  I'll stick to the local mom & pop store usually if they dont have it they can order it.

Well after a strongly worded email to Bas Pro, I got a call today from our store manager. She said if I came into the store again and would be a secret shopper for her, she would give me a $20.00 gift card. All I have to do is come and shop like I would normaly do, then ask for her right before I checked out and she would give me the card. Well we'll see.

Bass Pro Manager called me a little while ago.  He appologised for the incident. He said the guy has been there since they opened and was not sure why he was that way.  He said thay can order, it just depends on if they have one in the US or not.  I explained how I know now (from other conversations with other stores) that it will take appx 30 days to order it.  He asked about the other stores and their prices.  I gave them to him and he explained that Cabelas is not close enough to be competition.  He would match the 350$ price that several places quoted.  He would never commit to the 335 that the place in homer gave me.  I still am not buying from BPS.  He is checking on if there is a supplier that has one.  I am still gonna go with the place in Homer.
