This is a curly maple slate call that I built this weekend and listed on ebay tonight. The dye is a custom mix of 3 different colors. The sides of the call appear almost black. I may work on another mix with a bit less black... what ya' think?
Looks great Wendell, I have actually been dying or staining my curly maple as well lately, I think it pronounces the character of the wood better....good work.
It looks mighty fine to me!!!
Call and color looks good, does the civil war call come with a ghost, wow what a story.

Fine Lookin Call ! :icon_thumright:

Obviously the title is a shot at my comment of how I'm not a fan of dyed wood calls when I said that I think they are butt ugly. Yes I still stand behind that opinion and agree with the title of the thread. Better than most dyed calls but still not as nice as the wood if it was kept in its natural state.
Still not a fan of dyed wood calls, jmo
I think the dye enhanced that wood a lot.
Dang, Angry Bird, you got me. :) I'll take the "better than most" part as a compliment and agree that not everybody likes the same thing in wood or calls.
Personally, I don't care for the parquet style inlay bands around calls (the kind assembled in a foreign country on a backing), but that is just my personal taste.
Dyed calls aren't for everyone, and I, too, enjoy a really nice figured grain unenhanced by anything but a nice clear finish. There are definitely some woods that I wouldn't think about adding dye to.
I'll have to post a picture of the deep purple call I just finished for a little young lady in Iowa once it is finished.
I don't dislike it, but it reminds me of a bowling ball.
I like it Wendell! Having been a carpentry contractor for about 20 years and building all manner of custom woodworking; cabinets, entertainment centers, book shelves, etc., I understand Angry Bird's position/opinion and the idea of letting wood's natural grain show through. But I definitely think the appearance of some woods, especially maple, can benefit from having the grain enhanced with some stain or dye. Even a polyurethane varnish that turns the maple a little golden can make a difference. Nice call Wendell!
Yeah I agree with ya Wendell about inlays except for A+J's Custom Calls strikers with the Mother of Pearl inlays.... Those are sweet! :icon_thumright:
Just like laminate calls. I just can't get myself past the thought that they are nothing but a call put together from scrapes of wood. Especially the ones with purpleheart or Osage orange woods. Now those are truly butt ugly in my opinion.
A purple call + Iowa = Gotta be a Vikings fan! :TooFunny:
looks good.........pretty cool looking..........

A+J's strikers are beautiful, no doubt!
I just can't seem to get too excited about building laminate calls myself anymore. Even though I used off-cuts (scraps) in some of my laminates, I often bought some of the bolder colored and grained woods specifically for laminate making. The time involved in cutting, milling, matching and gluing the woods is just more than I care to mess with anymore. Take a look at some of Glen Marrer's laminates... those things are nothing short of works of art! He does some with angles that are extremely intricate... just incredible! No way I could make myself take one into the woods though... too pretty!
The purple call is for the younger sister of the girl I did the first hot pink dyed call for. Sorry if this damages anyones retinas... ;D

I am guessing you got in touch with your feminine side building that call!!! :TooFunny:
I like it! The root beer colored one, not the pink......lol
If my daughter shows a real interest in bird hunting, I'll have to commission a pink aluminum.
Looks great to me Wendell!
Added it to my watch list, might end up as mine....

Anyone who throws mud at this call needs their eyes checked! Super great call Wendell, I too, like David, like the rootbeer color. I wonder ifyou have any quilted maple what it would look like? You just keep on making 'em dear friend...pappy
The call is beautiful Wendell! :you_rock:
Some of you may remember my challenge a long time back about seeing who has the ugliest turkey call. Most everyone agreed that mine was the ugliest they had seen. So until someone steps up to the challenge mine is still ugliest. But yours is a good contendor. haha Actually I kinda like it.
When I dye curly maple I call it tiger maple and that is a great looking tiger maple call. :icon_thumright:
looks great :you_rock:
I think it looks great. Very nice. How does it sound?
I would not mind killing a turkey with Ugly Betty :you_rock: :toothy9:

Thanks, all, for the positive comments. Here is my description from ebay:
This call is made of curly maple and dyed a deep olive green. The call comes with a leopardwood striker which produces good purrs and clucks. The cuts are crisp, strong and produce good volume. The yelps start with a sweet, higher pitched first note breaking into a medium-high, raspy second note. This call sounds as good as it looks.
I like it as well.
It looks real purty to me!
I think it's a fine lookin' call!
Well, this one had a higher "calling". ;) The ebay crowd didn't bite, so it has been donated to an auction for a Wounded Warriors hunt. This hunt is put on by Peterson Outdoor Ministries out of Webb City, MO. You can check out their website at:
http://www.petersonoutdoors.org/ (http://www.petersonoutdoors.org/)
Hopefully it will bring a decent price to help with their hunt. You might recognize a couple of folks in the photos. Stephan Richardson with Hooks calls is involved with this group as well.
You know I liked that call Wendell, but I've got to save the cabbage for the special call you are making me ;D
I have a feeling it ain't gonna be $50 :o

I have a feeling you are right about that... ;D
I'm sticking with the same design idea, but possibly different fill materials. I plan on turning the pot this weekend.
What do you think of this to use as fill on the "C"?

7 hours left on the ebay auction for the piece... I'm hoping it works out. I would have it laser cut by the guy doing the back of the call. Looking at a different fill material for the track as well...
Looks fine to me :)
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Wendell, I bought the one that had the slight chip in the hole, that you had on E-bay at the same time as the Hanging Barn call and the one you are saying is Butt Ugly. I love the call and mine is the andonized aluminum one that looks just like this one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to me she is beautiful and sounds even better.

Thanks for your purchase. Glad to hear you like the way that call turned out. I hope yours gets a place by the neck of many birds to come. :icon_thumright:
My opinion but I think the call has a interesting look about it ... The Hot Pink call blinded me though !!!! Jus kidding Wendell . Honestly I love the idea of the pink or purple calls , especially since it'll get two more kids interested in the outdoors man. Great job as usual !
Jason
I wouldn't change a thing!
Looks good to me
