Title: Trumpet question
Post by: jbennett on May 16, 2012, 10:13:17 PM
Please give any advice you have to learn how to blow a trumpet. I have bought two and have no clue where to start.

Blowing won't work too well. You suck or draw air in between closed lips similar to a kissing sound. That will get you started making sound. Think soft lip pressure with just a little air and relaxed jaw, lips, and mouth. Dropping your jaw will allow it to break over to a lower pitch for two note yelp. Look up savduck's video on the boob method on here.

Here's savducks video. I keep it on hand as I'm trying to learn the trumpet myself.

Buy a quality trumpet.  PM or call people on here.  Most will give you solid advice.

PRACTICE A  LOT

It took me two years of messing around with a trumpet to make a decent yelp.
I took two longbeards this spring with a trumpet.

PRACTICE A  LOT

X2
Like West Augusta said, buy a quality trumpet. It will cut your learning time way down.
I've been playing them for many years and I still play one almost daily. Only serious people learn them well. I've seen people try to make every sound under the sun with them except the sounds they need to be trying to make. If your going to practice yelping, then practice yelping. Forget about learning how to gobble or purr on one until you get the basics down.

Thanks guys for all of the advice and the link to the instructional video was very helpful. I got my first trumpet in today and have begun what is sure to be a lifelong learning experience. I will hopefully through much practice have it down enough to try it in the woods by next spring.

I think this is a good subject to make a Sticky on. You can ask 5 different call makers how to play one and they all have their take on instructions.
