There's been alot of good information passed along here on OG and with several seasons over and winding down, was curious how everyone else does. We don't post as much about the days we come home empty but atleast for me, they sure outnumber the days of success.
This spring has been good for me this year. I hunted 4 1/2 days, called in longbeards inside 20 yards on three of them with two kills. Work kept me from going out of state or hunting more here in IN.
Last year I hunted with my son for 8 days before I was able to get him on a bird here in our home state. Over the years, I would guess the ratio for me would be about 4 to 1. How about you all?
pitiful here...just pitiful. Don't even want to figure it all out.
Hunted 5 days so far this season, called in one hen to 7-8 feet, no gobblers. Couple years ago, I was in the woods for about 2 hours before I took a jake (I figure I've been paying for that for the past two years LOL).
Between guiding youth days and hunting the first two weeks of the season we normally kill or guide kills roughly 60% of the time.
After that it drops off to probably 1 bird in gun range per 3 days hunted.
2 states, 5 days hunted, 6 Tom's tagged.
9 days hunted so far. 1 longbeard dead. I've seen birds everyday but 1. 2 weeks left to hunt, but my hunting will be limited now.
I hunted a total of 13 days so far, killed one on the tenth day, i have 5 days to hunt til the end of the season.
7 days so far no kills for me. But close everyday. 3 mornings I actually was so close I could see my longbeard hanging from the branch 20 yds in front of me. So even if I don't score this year it was a great season so far. My dad managed to bag one that I called in when he started to circle me he swung to close to dad. That's as good as scoring for me.
18 for me between Georgia, MO youth season, and Missouri regular season (can only bhunt til one but I counted them as full days). Watched nine birds bite the dust
5 days hunted, 1 bird killed between my dad and I. We still have until the end of the month to add to that.
Went to Kentucky to hunt with cousins for 4 days. It rained the whole time, but still saw many birds and put two on the ground. Came back for Ohio's opener and haven't quit. I've spent 12 mornings in my home woods here with no such luck. I've called in 6 hens to my setups, but haven't seen any toms or jakes until this past Saturday. Just couldn't pull the trigger on one of the jakes that came in though, due to our poor hatch last year and lack of mature bird sightings this year. The Ohio season has been a weird one for me. I've got this Saturday and Sunday to play, so there's still hope! I guess the short answer would have been 16:2 :)
I hunted two mornings, little over 4 hours total to harvest my two longbeards here in Ohio. This is the first time I have ever tagged out in two hunts!
I hunted 4 days this year and harvested 2 gobblers. I guided my nephew on a youth hunt and made 2 hunts with a buddy to call for him but no birds where taken on those hunts. I saw birds and heard gobbling on every hunt except for the youth hunt.
I've sort of kept track of it somewhat over the years and average about what you do...that 3 or 4 to one area. Now, sometimes those birds called into shooting range have been jakes, however. West of the Mississippi my average is definately higher, more like 2:1.
It looks like I enjoyed 13 morning outings plus 2 afternoon/evenings, and I ended up with 4 birds...plus a miss. :)
I hunted 5 mornings killed 2 missed 1 and called one in for my buddy which he killed. All were longbeards should be 4:5 but I'll take 3:5 ;D
Six days left me with one bird in TN.
Back home I tagged out with my one Eastern less than an hour into the season.
One trip calling for a friend and he got one.
Eight days hunting = three dead longbeards.
I've never counted how many days I hunted. I can tell you I called in 11 that was killed, 5 by me. I didn't count how many I called in just the ones that rode home in the TRKYHTR truck.
TRKYHTR
4 hunts to get my tom here in Ontario, Canada...
Guess I didn't really do all that bad..made probably 10 hunts...had 1 ruined by a guy shooting the bird off the roost...shot 2 and had a couple more get away that should have been shot.
7 days hunted this year and 2 gobblers down.
I have struggled somethin' fierce this year...only 1 bird in 9 hunts
I got 4 days left though.
I didn't get to hunt a lot this year either. Baby on the way, sold our house, in the middle of moving (not good planning on all accounts). I hunted two days in Florida and killed a bird and hunted three days in indiana and missed and killed a bird.
I did get to go the first morning of the youth season and got a bird in gun range.
well hunted first 2 days, heard them but none cooperated.. and thats all i got out so far
some body please help
17.5 days hunted, killed 5 birds on 5 different days. Saw/heard birds every trip but 2 or 3.
I'll start from last season... Over a dozen times out, and zippo. Bad JuJu all around. We all have a season's like that. Hung up and hend up birds, weather etc.etc.
This year I'm back! ;D I've been out 8X's. and tagged 3 mature Tom's,had 2 blown opportunities, and also have an assist. Truly an awesome season.
Thank You
:cross2:
My worst year, several years ago, I killed one and called in two others that buddies killed for the whole 5 week season, plus one missed bird. That was a bad average, one for every 10 days or so. This year, my best season yet, I called in 12 longbeard kills and one miss in the first 2 weeks. Gobbling slowed down after that, and I started going only about every other day, but I've seen 17 longbeards down in 4 and a half weeks at this point. It's been a good year. Hunting 2 states and about 8 properties with about 10 other people. Called in several people's first birds. Got two on multiple mornings which is always fun.
Wow, my first thought for this thread was to hopefully encourage some of the newer turkey hunters but you guys are putting the hammer down. Way to go!
Our whole turkey population here in IN is less than what many states total for a spring harvest. With bird numbers down as well, many guys I know had their spring harvest streaks broken this year.
Took my boy and called in his bird first morning. This year and last year he was two for two on morning hunts. Went a second morning with no shots. Then went third day and called my tom with a connect.
After that, shifted gears and tried to hook my friend up this year. Last year called him in a double. This year, no such luck with him. He got caught moving. He didn't shoot. He decided to walk upright numerous times when we tried to get ahead of the birds.
I told my buddy I'm counting two 'extra' birds because one dropped down in front of him and another was coming in on a rope that he didn't connect on. Overall, good season.
I hunted 17 days total this Spring and saw 4 birds killed on 5 shots (my son missed the first bird).
I killed 2.
My 8 year old killed 1.
Sat with a buddy and he killed 1. (wish we'd have had a video camera, it was a perfect set up for filming).
It was a bad year for me as far as numbers go, but my encounters seemed to be about on par. I had 6 more longbeards inside of 40 yards that I spooked or could not get a clean shot at for one reason or another. It was that kinda of spring, I zagged when I should have zigged.
In LA jakes are legal and I only hunted LA 1 morning and passed on one at 25 yards.
Great post.

I know you saw more than the 5 you killed die. You had a heck of a season.
Not much time this year, started late. Would have liked to have had more time to hunt. I went 2 for 4 this year.
Youth hunt I was one day two birds , then for me it was two days two birds :gobble:
Then a friend called me last Sunday and needed help it was at most a 45 min hunt and he was done . Lol it has just been one of them years you dream of . It's like I could have used a duck call and killed em . :newmascot:

I saw 6 die, you were the only other person I saw drop the hammer, but should have seen 9 hit the dirt. All together I saw 5 longbeards (killed 1 and missed 1) and 9 jakes in Mississippi, no telling how many I heard, and in South Carolina I saw 18 longbeards (killing 4, should have gotten 1 more and tagged out) and 8 jakes. That those are the ones I saw hunting. I have no clue how many I saw riding around. Out of the 18 in SC I saw 5 of them could have been the same bird twice but not sure.
8 days hunted this year and 5 of these days a longbeard got it. Best ratio kill to hunt I think I ever had for a season..
