Title: NY success
Post by: NYGobblergetter on May 08, 2012, 02:25:35 PM
Well, it was a nasty day to be turkey hunting, but with a little team work from my buddy Wade, we got it done. It had been raining all night and our expectations were not high, but we knew there was at least one good tom roosting on the hill adjacent to a plowed field. So we got setup and didnt even call due to the rain. Arounf 5:54 a hen pitched out into the field and then the tom, followed by several other hens and a jake. 2 other jakes joined the show later after being in front of the blind at 7 yards. The old boy was eating up our calls, but staying close to the hens. Finally the hens started walking off and then the 3 jakes started chasing the gobblers all over the place. We thought he was gone but they turned him around and drove him kinda towards us. The tom and jakes seperated and he finally started getting closer. The jakes ran at him again, but he finally grew a set and chased them off. He finally worked his way in to 30 yards and I let the 870 eat. Nice 2 yr old, 7/8 sharp spurs, 10" beard 20lbs.

Also, he is the bird I got for my dad on Sunday. His first longbeard. 10.5" beard, 7/8 spurs 19.7 lbs. (we should have had a double but communication error)

Congrats.  :agreed:  It was nasty. I also hunted this morning and had a gobbler at 80 yds out with two hens and he wasnt going to leave them no matter what kind of sweet talk I delivered. Good job getting it done.

Congrats on a great bird. And a thumbs up for hunting this crappy day. I couldn't even get out it was a monsoon here this morning in Madison county.
