Title: Opening morning
Post by: Kywoodsman on April 19, 2012, 09:58:48 PM
Well after a rough start to opening day last Saturday it ended up a lot better. Saturday morning I went to a farm I have permission on and got set up well before first light so that I wouldn't spook the birds on roost. Well right as it was breaking first light someone on the neighboring property comes walking down the fence row with a flash light and sets down right on the fence row. To make it worse once it got light I found that someone else the landowner gave permission to was set up just about a hundred yards away from me. Every time I called they just called louder, so about 8 oclock I left and went to another property. I walked out across a ridge and hit the call and a bird gobbled back very close. I set up as quick as I could and within 15 minutes I had 4 gobblers gobbling within about 100 yards. One came strutting down the ridge and gobbling his head off. I was able to get a shot on him at about 35 yards and down he went. He weighed 24 pounds, had 1 inch spurs, and had a 11 3/4 inch beard. It was a great way to end opening morning.
