Title: 4-16-12 HEAD STOMP
Post by: OLE RASPY on April 16, 2012, 09:04:58 PM
Took this bird today at 2:00 pm and believe me i was one happy dude.Anybody on here could have heard me shout. :lol:First bird of the season and the hunt didnt last 10 minutes.
Went to my hotspot location on a native grass field and as i top the rise in the field i saw 2 guys dressed in camo up in the powerline on a adjoining property bout 800 yards away and i thought to myself well this BLOWS.If there was a turkey in there it prolly aint now,so i made a few clucks and yelps and nothing responded so i turned around and walked the mile back to the truck.(Oh did i mention i shot at a bird in this same spot saturday moning at 20 yards only to see him and his buddy take off flying :angry9:Didnt draw a single feather and still dont know how i missed him but i did.Never missed one that close, i have missed them further a couple times but not 20 yards.)Anyway back to my hunt today  I left that farm and got in the truck and drove 600 yards up the rode and pulled up at the barn and got out and didnt take but one hooks mouth call and my yingling slate call and my shotgun.Im in stealth mode.I walk maybe 100 yards in the pasture field and the wind was pretty strong today and i spotted him strutting on a pond bank he didnt see me, he had his arse pointed towards me,thats a good thing.I got down on my belly and crawled in the grass which is bout 10 inches high and crawled with in 30 yards of this bird  he didnt know i was anywhere around.I didnt figure i could pull it off being fat but i did. :TooFunny:Anyway i get on one knee and he is looking right at me i thought ,but he went back in full strut and turn his arse to me again and thats when i stood up and pointed my gun at him so when he turned back around he would see me and throw his ole head up and thats exactly what he did and i let the 935 mossy roar and he started flopping so i went over and gave him a head stomp and thank the good lord once again. He only had one hen with him i saw her fly when i shot.Good day for me.One thing wrong though with this gobbler. He had beard rot.I didnt pay any attention to his beard i guess because it wasnt but 2 inches long and blond. He had a full fan and 1 inch spurs and weighed 21 pounds and 2 ounces.Forgot to add i never touch a turkey call cause i so close to him if i did it might have spooked him anyway.Hadem with me just incase though.

Good job, not easy to sneak up on one like that. Love the turkey tote also. This wind has been killer, next few days look better.
