Title: ATTN custom call makers
Post by: scottprice on April 09, 2012, 08:50:07 AM
As some of you might have seen in my other thread, i broke my dads only turkey call yesterday. :help: A Penns Woods Roger Latham True Tone box call, he had the call for 25+ years and i want to get him a nice replacement.

I have seen some amazing work by you custom guys on this site and im wondering if anyone makes box calls for around $40-$50 to my door? I know thats a tough price for the work you guys put into your calls, but im on a budget (im in college) and dont have a huge pile of money to spend. I just think a custom call would mean more than if i got him a production call.....although i would consider a Woodhaven Real Hen or another True Tone...

If anyone here makes calls and can work within my price range id be interested in talking with you, please PM me!

Get him a Jerry Zebro bloodwood over walnut glued box for $40.  He has won many awards and to me its the best deal going for box calls.  For $60 you can get a Gibson box from WillowRidgeCalls,  we used them a lot this past weekend for the Wisconsin youth hunt and had great success.  You can gobble get a great raspy hen yelp and a great jake yelp.  It is a little longer then a short box.  Scoot

That PW Latham True Tone call that he references, if it is like the ones I've seen, is an imitation of a Turpin box call.  If I am right, it has a tophat bushing in the paddle rather than a screw and spring system.

Does anyone here make a Turpin style boxcall?

The current production from Turpin's descendants is  $150.

I found a couple of PW Latham TT's that sold on e-bait in the $50-60 range.

He said that he'd rather get his dad a custom call.

The field grade boxes from Al and Josh are going to be a touch outside that price range, but not by much. For the quality and their reputation, you're getting a whole lot of call for the $$

Spring creek custom calls. he makes half moon boxes and long boxes. I have a padauk over butternut long box that i love its like having a live hen in your vest.   Also will not find a better price for a great hunting box call.

Not saying those calls don't sound great, but if having a custom made call is a priority, I don't want to see him walk away with something less.
