Title: What does this sign mean?
Post by: cornfedkiller on March 25, 2012, 05:08:06 PM
While out scouting for deer earlier this year, I came to a spot in the woods down in a valley where there was probably 40 primary wing feathers on the ground in an area about 10-15 yards in diameter.  I didnt think much of it at the time and kept moving along, but not Im thinking about hunting this property for turkeys.  Was this a roost site?  A dusting area?

Not sure which part of their daily activities causes them to lose wing feathers, or why there were so many there..

Could be a roost site. I know some places I hunt in the fall it's nothing to see 25 to 30 turkeys together in a single area. Not to mention the fighting and carrying on that they do. Could possibly explain all the feathers.

If it were indeed a roost site, you should have also seen large amounts of droppings around and in piles.  In one of my roost sites, there are several hundred birds in the winter, so the piles get pretty big since they use the same trees.  Feathers, mainly the primaries, also litter the ground in the area.  My guess is roost site.

Sounds like a roost site.  Look for a carpet of poopies all around the tree (s) and areas of open/more open ground where they might be inclined to fly down to.

Could it have been something killed a turkey there & nothing left but the wing feathers? Recently I came across the remains of a turkey carcass in the woods, few bones & wing feathers were all that was left.

I thought about that right away, but I dont think so since I never saw any bones or anything.  Also, all the wing feathers looked like they were broken off, as the quills were all busted up on the ends.

Sounds like a varmit left the feathers there after a turkey bit the dust. they can drag a wing along way. I've seen roost sites and feathers are few and manure is plentifull. Fighting looses alot of smaller feathers but lots of long wing feathers usually = dead turkey. :newmascot:
