Title: Rem 870 choke?
Post by: Kyfoster11 on February 23, 2011, 07:41:52 PM
Ive got a rem 870 21 in barrel and I am wanting to shoot win #5 3 in through it.  Any recommendations on a choke?  Or what choke/shell combos are good out of the rem.
thanks

I have a Kick's GT .655 and a JellyHead .665 and both do well with #6 lead. The JH is far better with hevi shot though.

For your setup I would recommend a JH in a .660 and spend the $ you save on ammo.

Im a big Kick's fan.  I was recommended a 660 rhino by a friend and was wondering if the kicks 660 would do well  with the #5 wins.

i dont think you can go wrong with a kicks especially when it comes to lead.  I own two one for my stoeger .655 and one for the mossberg 835 .670

if i were going to shoot lead only my first choke would be a kicks gobblin thunder and then a truglo ssx both of those have performed well with lead for me

BP what size Kicks would you shoot?  I really like a #5 shot.  I was thinking a 660.

we run a 660 with the lead and 675 rang with the Heavy stuff.

kicks recommends a .660 for the 3" shells and a .665 for the 3.5's in shells in number 5

personally i would go with the .660 because that choke will also shoot 6's well too, so you are covered if you decide to shoot 5's or 6's

If you decide to go with Kick's I would recommend the .660

Indian Creek .665

My 870 is a 20, but I run Truglo Gobble Stopper Extreme with lead 5's and it is death in a small package. It also has a 21" barrel.

I would either go with a Truglo or Kicks personally, but there are a lot of good chokes out there.

SKU#  TG177X

It is .565 constriction. I have killed one at 47 yards lasered after the shot and he looked like he was hit by lightning. Under 45 and it just bowls them over. Under 25 and it will literally cut his head off.

i would take a look at a SumToy customs choke, he's been putting up some very respectable patterns with a variety of lead loads.

I said Indian Creek .665 because you want to shoot #5's.

With #6's or #7.5's, I would try the Ventilator .655

I emailed Indian Creek and they said to get a .655.  Do you think it will pattern ok or be too tight?

I can't speak for IC 655 but the Carlson's 655 in my BPS inv + shoots the Win HV lead 6s very tight so it is possible. They do let you swap if you are not satisfied.

If they let you switch then that would be pretty good then.
thanks

A .655 choke seems to do well with Lead in a RemChoke barrel.  It's almost certainly too tight for HTL though.  A .665 is a better all-around do-it-all choke for both Lead and HTL, #5's through #7.5's.

i have used several 870 over the years. the 2 best was.

870 wingmaster with a 28 inch barrel and a factory rem 660 choke. with federal flight control 3 inch 2 oz #5's.....

870 super mag sps-t thumbhole with a 23 inch barrel and an original mad max choke with 3.5 inch federal flight control 2 oz #5's

I had decent luck with 3.5" HV #5's and the factory remington extra full choke.

I believe I was getting 150+ at 40 yds with that setup.

I shot my 870 21 in barrel yesterday with a 655 kicks and to be honest was disappointed.  I shot Win 3in #6's and Rem 3in #5's at 30 and 40 yds and expected alot better.  Im going to have to play some more with it.  I actually think the choke may be too tight.  Back to the drawing board.

I shoot a Kicks .660 from a 21" 870 and the only thing I was happy with was either H13 6's 3" 2oz or Nitro H378's.  I got a .665 and it sucked too.  I shot everything I could get my hands on in 4,5, and 6 shot, Fed, Rem, Win in lead and Hevi.

I'm thinking it's the short barrel????

The #6's shot the best...but I think polishing it might help.

I have a truglo tg170x .665 and a hs strut .675  I used with my 870 remington. Both shot well with winchester no 5. I shot the High density shot in the hs strut undertaker. I still have both if you are interested in trade for turkey stuff.

Switched to kicks .655 in my 870. 20.5 in barrel polished/forcing cone polished. Turned my best numbers to date with lead out to 35-40yds with win xx 3/2/6's.

410-415 in a 10in circle @  20yds  Win XX 3/2/6's

254 @ 30yds

154 @ 35yds

97 @ 40yds

234 in a 12" in circle at 40yds.    Hevi 3/2/7's    *Hevi shot not recommended in Kicks.
