Title: Decoy help
Post by: Full Flight on March 04, 2012, 09:55:51 AM
I know I'm in the Gun forum but would still like your guy's opinion.

Picked up turkey hunting about 5 years ago. In this limited time I have always used hen decoys.  I usually use a pair of decoys with one feeding hen and one upright hen.  It seems to work pretty well.  I guess I am scarred to used a Tom or Jake decoy figuring I might keep a subordinate bird out of gun range instead of calling him in.  I'm sure I am missing some opportunities to kill bird due to this phobia.  Could some of you give me some suggestions on when to use Tom and Jake decoys.

It's turkey hunting. Try it. I've had gobblers run in, attack the jake decoy. I've had them skirt around the jake decoy at 50 yds+ and go on by. But it's exciting when they flog it. Early, late or middle of the season, I haven't connected a dot to a good or bad time. I've had more positive than negative responses with the jake decoy.
