Title: I need advice please
Post by: BrownTrout on February 27, 2012, 06:55:10 PM
First I have to thank Clark (allaboutshooting) for shipping me the SSX tube immediately, I ordered in Saturday and it already came today.  Thanks again Clark.  The negative part follows.

Well I decided to deep clean(Clarks method) my new shotgun today before I fired it for the first time. I took my time and literaly spent a hour off and on scrubbing it with brush and solvent. I get it all done and in between scrubbing sessions I started on the new unopened choke tubes(SSX, IC). Well needless to say, after the last soaking on the tubes, I pick up my brand new SSX and it slips out of my hand and lands right on the floor thread side down. It didn't ruin the threads any but put a slight and I mean slight flat spot on the very end of the tube--thread side. Now, its not noticeable really by eye if I handed it to you without telling you. If you really look at it under a light you can see the spot where its slightly out of round.

When I screw it into the barrel its as flush as the factory tube or the Indian creek tube. Its unnoticeable even with a bore light.

Do you guys think that after the first shot it will conform completely to the barrel? I think it will. Maybe my first shot out of it might have an impacted pattern, but I think it would be fine on the follow up shot. Or should I not use it? I've never dropped a tube before.

What say you?

Thanks!

By the way, I can't even get the camera to pick up the blem or I'd post a pic.

For safety's sake, PM Clark and ask his opinion.

Cash,

I took you up on the suggestion and I'm graciously waiting his opinion.

I feel like such a turd.  I could see not using it if it was real flat and I could see a shadow or a dark spot where it was sticking up noticeably while screwed in the barrel.  But I can't see the deformity while looking down the barrel at all.  I was thinking about sticking it on a plumb bob and giving it a lite tap on the opposite end with a rubber mallet.

Clark will help you out the best he can.

It may be nothing, but it's better to be safe.

I did the same thing to an Undertaker .665" tube about two years ago.     The threads were fine, but the leading edge of the tube had a small ding in it.   I wrapped electrical tape around some needle nose pliers and bent the metal back into position.    I followed up with some 600 grit sandpaper wrapped around a wooden dowel rod and smoothed out the metal.

I followed up by shooting some 1 ounce target loads, and then some 2 oz. lead turkey loads.   Except for some missing bluing, you cannot even tell where the metal got dinged now.

I certainly think Clark will work with you if it's beyond use.     I didn't have such a recourse, and took it on as a challenge to see if I could fix the choke.

Hey Jason,

It's probably just fine but rather than have you be concerned, I'll send you a new one.

I'll have it on its way to you this evening.

Thanks,
Clark

Clark,

Thank you and that is very nice of you, but please don't.  I dropped it and thats not your fault by any means.    And I wouldn't feel right accepting that.  I will use this one because I gave it a little tap on the opposite end of the plumb bob and I think it will be fine.  It seems to have got back to its original shape.  Besides, I think the pressure from the shot now will have it perfect again.

Thanks again Clark,

Jason

Tell me about it.  The guy bent over backwards for me and believe me I'm not the type of guy to forget that.  I paid for the cheapest shipping possible and the man overnighted it to me.  Then due to my ignorance he's willing to replace the tube with a brand new one.  Pretty generous guy and he will get all of my business in the future.

Thanks again Clark and everybody else that gave me suggestions.

I love this site.  It has a great group of guys on it.

yup Clark is a good dude, met him at the Turkey convention and he sat and talked with me a while and I even ended up buying a hevi choke from him.
