Title: Purrs on mouth call?
Post by: wisconsinteacher on February 21, 2011, 09:47:23 PM
I can not get a good purr out of a mouth call.  I have tried a few kinds and it just does not sound good.  What are your tips on making the purr sound?  I can yelp and cut.  Thanks.

I get the back of my mouth (soft palate?) to vibrate as I huff air over the call.  It makes a much more realistic sounding purr to me than trying to flutter my lips.  Try growling like a dog and start to blow air out of your mouth while keeping that vibration.....that will give you a starting point to the technique

Without a call put the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth about a half inch or so behind the front teeth. Hold lips loosely together and force air out with a T. Tongue will wind up behind front teeth.

Practice short bursts. Later keep lips together as you repeat. Later put a call in there and see if a purr comes out.

Send LX_Trkyhntr a PM. He helped me figure it out in no time through a PM or two. He told me to growl like Roy Orbison did in the song "Pretty Woman" and apply it to the call. It certainly made sense to me. It does take some practicing but if you can roll that growl then you can certainly purr on a mouth call.

The best purr sound comes from your throat.  Think of it like you are "clearing your throat."  However, the main thing is you will never get a good purr out of a call that isn't capable.  I have found that two reed batwings do the best job.  Overall, you want a call with light reeds to get that good rollover.

No you'll probably find its the opposite of what you think.  You probably want a lighter reed, lighter tension call that isn't as raspy.

I have been working on my Purrs with a Mouth call (Hooks) and I am so new to Mouth Calls. But after watching a Video from Primos, they had 2 guys doing it, One would roll his Tongue and the other would use his throat and it sounded alot better. But like Wil said some people cant do it with there throat. I need to get a Good Instructional dvd before I start praticing bad Habits. I have been working with a Mouth Call for just a few months, and can do some of the Calls, But what is that site I hear some guys talk about on here I think on Thursdays where you can get help?

I put the tip of my tongue on latex and use throat. Kind of like I am girgiling mouth wash. I think it sound good. But most of those American Idol Contestants think they sound good too. My momma said it sounded good.
