Title: WalMart lead shells??????
Post by: Tom Foolery on February 12, 2012, 06:06:50 PM
Guys I found a super deal on some Win HV 3.5" 2oz #6 shot but I have a question about them.  I have always heard that stuff at WalMart is made to lesser specs, probably internet rumor?  Anyways, I found these shells and I opened them up and they all sound like a baby rattle.  I don't mean you can hear some shot shake because just about all do that.  I mean these babies are really loud in the rattle department.  Anyone ever have any problems with WalMart ammo?  What would make them rattle like that?

Thanks

Don't know about the 3.5 inch shell, but just now, I got a 3 inch #5 HV Winchester shell and held it to my ear and didn't hear a rattle. I bought it last year at Wal-Mart.

Yep, the 3" I have are quiet also.  The 3.5's have a little more shooka shooka to them, LOL.

I've had that happen with a bunch of different shells.  I haven't noticed it happening to any specific manufacturer or load or anything.  It's like the crimp wasn't mashed down enough, or something?  I haven't noticed it causing any performance issues, though.

I shot some Win HV 3"-#4- 1 3/4oz from Walmart today and was happy with how they shot...might go get another box just to have since I know how they shoot....especially since they were only $10.96/box

Would have preferred 5's but 4's was the only selection.

You gotta think about it like this....it is reasonably safe to assume that WalMart has probably beaten a company down so much on their prices that they would almost HAVE to cut corners somewhere in order to be able to still make some kind of money.  If a company knows that they are producing a butt load of their product for WalMart it stands to reason that quality control probably isn't at the top of the priority list when a deadline for supplying is breathing down their necks.

It's my understanding they are all the same. Wal mart, last I heard was the largest ammo seller in the country thus able to buy in greater bulk and sell cheap.

Ammo may not fall into that cheaping out category. I would imagine that there are still some standards in place that they would refuse to fall below. I can say with certainty that I have dealt with some WalMart products that were quite obviously of a much poorer quality.

It's not a WalMart product though, it's a Winchester product. The shells are the same that you would buy in any sporting goods store. I know I have bought them in both places. NO difference!

Maybe I should have stated that somewhat differently. I wasn't referring to WalMart branded products. I was referring to products sold at WalMart.

I do warranty work for virtually every major computer manufacturer through my employer and can say without a doubt that computers sold at WalMart have a significantly higher failure rate. I see it firsthand every day. I have also noticed that identically branded products in other areas seemed to be of inferior quality as well.

That's why I said that there are some places that skimping wouldn't be allowed. At least as far as safety is concerned. WalMart by nature is cheap, not stupid.

No.  There is no "skinmping" where ammo is concerned.  I have purchased turkey ammo at walmart and when I went to gander, the lot numbers from waly world and gander were sequential.  Wal MArt simply buys in the "hundreds of thousands"  where everyone ulse buys in the hundreds OR thousands of items...
