Title: 16ga Lead Choices
Post by: Mr16Gauge on February 08, 2012, 09:21:29 PM
Going "old school" this season.  Building a Turkey Special on an 870 16ga frame.

Have the barrel, action.  Waiting on the Shur Shot stock and a selection of chokes to arrive.

Would like suggestions as where to start for a decent Pb load.

Appreciate the input.

Pictures and details to follow as the Old School 16 goes together.

Regards

Fiocchi Golden Pheasant #5 in Lead, or Hevi-Shot Duck #6 if you choose to go HTL. Pure murder out of my 16

Thank you for the responses.

What choke constirction are you using with the ammo?

.600, .610 .620 ??

Assume you are utilizing ported chokes?

Again, thank you

Thanks

Singles are a ton of fun to use.

Easy to carry and 99 times out of 100 dead bird when the gun goes boom.

Good Luck

I know this thread is about lead but wondering if anyone has tried Kent  tungsten matrix?
At one time they made it in a 1 1/4 load.

FWIW.................
• .600" = 20ga MOD
• .610" = 20ga IMP CYL
• .620" = 20ga CYL

The following is a generally agreed upon list of 16 ga shotgun TRUE BORE DIAMETERS (NON-BACKBORED BARRELS) and a listing of generally accepted choke constrictions (IN THOUSANDS OF AN INCH) noted prior to the choke diameter.

16 Gauge Constriction Diameter

• CYL .000" = .667"
• SKT I .004" = .663"
• IMP CYL .007" = .660"
• SKT II .010" = .657
• MOD .015" = .652"
• IMP MOD .020" = .647"
• FULL .028" = .639"
• XFULL .035" = .632"

Appreciate the update:

However:

Currently for sale on gun broker are the following Remington Threaded Chokes

REMINGTON HUNTER PORTED CHOKE 16 GA TURKEY .600

REINGTON PRECISION HUNTER CHOKE 16 GA TURKEY .610

REMINGTON HUNTER PORTED CHOKE 16 GA TURKEY .620

Having owned and currently owning 11 16 Gauge guns, we are fimiliar with the choke constrictions of a 16 ga weapon.

Appreciate the input.

Back to the origional question, what choke does Trophy Tracker use with the Fiocchi #5s?

I used a Tru-lock Imp Mod for the Golden Pheasant loads that I got off of a member on the 16ga Society Forum, a few years back. For the HTL load, I use the Factory Mod tube, or the factory bbl on an Ithaca 37. I keep my shots under 30yds, and everything is golden.

Shot the 1 1/16 oz load out of a 16ga model 12 full choke.  Slams ducks.

No problem. I have been a 16ga man since day one, and have nothing but love for them
