Title: Tagged a Bearded Hen In Virginia
Post by: GOLD HUNTER on October 31, 2011, 03:53:04 PM
Well guys after all the bad weather we had on Saturday with the rain, snow, sleet & wind it wasn't an idea opening day to hunt turkeys. We had a pretty day on Sunday which warmed up in the high 50's that melted the ice in the mountains. Last night it got down in the 30's & was calm & I headed out to a hot spot on the National Forest in the Craig Country mountains. Didn't hear anything at daylight so I decided to sit & listening & I heard turkeys at about 10:45am. Turkey's fed through the woods & every now & then they yelped back at me. It looked about 10-15  in this flock. Shot a bearded hen that weighed about 12 pounds & an 8 inch beard. This is the first bearded hen I ever killed.

The new old Remington 1187 that I had bought earlier this year and posted on here I was going to give it a new life in the woods, it made it's first kill today. I like to thank Jim Ward of Warbird turkey calls for making me a slate call over glass which was one of the calls I used in this hunt.

Hope everyone has a great season.  :icon_thumright:

Nice bird and the smile on your face tells a lot. Glad the shotgun did the job for you along with the new call.

Brian,

Who told you that was a hen?

  ILIKEHEVI-13

With over 150 gobblers to his credit Im pretty sure he knows the difference between a hen & a gobbler. Here in Va. the hens head seems to get more color to it in the fall than the dull gray in the spring.   :newmascot:

No problem.  All I was saying there have been a lot of bearded hens supposedly killed here in MO that ended up not being one.  There's only one way to know for sure and that is to have the animal taken to a wildlife headquarters who are the experts.

I forgot about the tips of the breast feathers.  Thanks Hal.

That's got to be one of the longest beards I have seen on a hen.  Most aren't near that long.  That is a trophy.  That would make a great mount.
