What us the max killing range of.lead #6 vs say #5 and #4? If it holds a patten of let's say 130 in a 10" at 40,50 yards
If you are getting 130 @ 50 yards with lead you are doing very well. With 130 @ 50 you could probably stretch it out to 56 -57 yards and still have enough pellets for a kill.
If you are getting 130 @ 40 yards you are still doing good with lead, but I would limit my shots to inside of 45-48.
The problem with the larger shot is your pellet count is going to tapper off quick and might not stay consistant enough for shots past 45 yards. I know alot of folks have killed birds past 50 yards with lead, but I feel past that it's more of a poke and hope then a sure thing.
The rule I go by is once you start getting below 100 in 10" you have found your max range. Good luck
usually about 40-45 yds
Shooting Rem 870:
XX 3/2/6's 100 @ 40 in a 10" circle (40 yd max)
*Patterned at 45-50yds and harvesting a turkey at that distance would be risky out of my set up with Pb 6's.
I'd pattern #5's and #6's at 35-40 Yards. Unless the #6's gave me at least 20 additional pellets in a 10" circle, I'd shoot the #5's. I recommend the Winchester Supreme High Velocity "Black" shells.
I have had guys come by and say with the Red Winchester 3-2-5 they kill them at 50. Had one say 58 steps. Now this is just what they say I have not seen with my own eyes. LOL Now I say 40 with lead and 50 with Heavy. Then that will give you a window if you misjudge him.
Well my 12 ga throws win hv #5s 1 3/4 about 150-160 in a 10" with a .650 . My 10 ga bps puts 160 in a 12" square target if 2 1/4 oz dunns loads with h&r factory xfull. My other chokes im sure will bring this up to 200 at 40. Wonder if if there's a difference between copper 5s vs 6s in brush like going through leaves and vines etc
Don't understand how you guys get 150-160 in a 10" @ 40 with 13/4 Pb 5's. Been testing guns for 30 yrs and can't get close to that with any brand of factory 5's. Berettas, Brownings, Remington, Mossberg, etc. Access to all chokes and gunsmithing...have never come close to that. No need for HTL if those numbers are consistently put on the board with factory ammo.

150-160 in 10" at a measured 40 Yards with Lead #5's? That would be outstanding, even with a long barreled 10 Gauge and Magnum shells.
I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I don't see any pictures.
I don't have any pictures from 2 yrs ago but if I got the money and walmarts has any I will get a box of hv #5s. It usually was around 130 hits but one day it put 151exactly . I thought that was the norm.
Now with the factory xfull choke my h&r put 160 #6s in the 12"at 40 yards out my 10gauge with 2 1/4 oz loads
Both patterns is 2.25oz loads first is my h&r 10factory ga factory full choke #6 winxx at 40a yards I in a 12"square

Next is from my bps10 with win hv 2 oz #4 at 40a yards with trulock 680

My comment pertained to the claim of 150-160 with 12 guage HV 1 3/4 Pb 5's...I would love to see those patterns..never seen anything close to that with the HV 1 3/4 loads that were spoken of.. 160 in a 12" circle @ 40 with 2.25 6's is not beyond reason...
Well I got a box of rem 3"12 ga premier turkey loads. They had the win hv but there was a 6$ price difference . Ill pattern tomorrow if I get the time
I killed a fall hen one time at 42yds with winchester supremes 3'' 1 3/4 oz of 6 shot
It sounds like the answer is 45 Yards, if you have enough pattern density.
This is numbers not kill. I did shoot a HV winchester 31/2-2-5. It gave me 125 in a 10 at 40 yards. I don't have the 6's or any of the red winchester shells. I see bigger numbers with the red ones.
Last Spring I killed my Gobbler at 53 paces with a Win. HV 3.5" 2oz. load of #6's. Use a Kick's GT .655 in my Benelli SBE. Did not require a second shot.I like to shoot them alot closer but had a good CLEAR shot and took it.
