Title: Cooking turkey while car camping
Post by: mcw3734 on March 23, 2026, 08:00:13 PM
I'm soon headed out for an out-of-state hunt that will have me on the road for close to two weeks. No guarantee, but... I expect to have a bird down early, but with another ~9 days before returning home. With that, I'd like to cook and eat the turkey while I'm car camping.

Any travel hunters out there with foolproof tips on cooking and eating your kill while on the road? I'll have a quality cooler and a Coleman camping stove. I'll be solo, so it'll take a while to eat one. I'm an inexperienced cook, so please include all details and don't assume anything.

Thank you!

Butter, flour and some creole seasoning is all you need. Some get fancier with the batters but it isnt needed to make it delicious.  Chunk it up, lightly season with creole, dredge in flour and fry it in butter with another layer of seasoning.

Using a dutch oven on your coleman with that exact recipe and use some canola oil to fry it up!  Keep the oil shallow enough to cover the meat and you are good.  Can use it multiple days and fry just what you want to eat.

Happy & G8rvet - By 'chunk it up', you taking 1" cubes? Larger, smaller?

Gooserbat - considering I'm headed to New Mexico with the NMG&F Gould's Raffle Tag, that would be a very appropriate meal.

Thank you to everybody that has replied so far!
