With enough practice I'm "in my mind" decent enough to make a cluck, cut, hen yelp, Jake yelp, purr, and fighting purr on my box calls, pot calls and mouth calls. I can also kee kee and kee kee run on a mouth calls.
However, when do you all decide which call you are going to use to make which sound on when hunting?
Do you just "take the turkeys temperature" and see what he likes by rotating calls to make him think there's different hens around?

Reading his temperature is always smart.
Ambient noise is the biggest determining factor, and it is 100% situational. But for the sake of conversation, I can say generally speaking its gonna sound really out of place if you're honkin on a long box at twilight before the forest is awake.
Me personally: im using an owl lube as long as possible. I want him giving away his location as many times as possible until I can ease in to a spot where I can sit down and potentially intercept him. Then and only then, I slip in my most subtle mouth call and start softly. Crescendo into the louder calls as necessary.
