Title: Travel meals?
Post by: Kygobblergetter on March 11, 2026, 04:32:11 AM
I'm just looking for some new meal ideas when I'm on the road hunting. Try to camp/live out of my car as much as possible. Typically I just live on sandwiches but I'm looking to diversify this year. I'll have a small blackstone griddle along this year. What do you guys that travel a lot like to eat that isn't fast food?

I generally eat a lot of turkey. Always have a small griddle for fajitas and eggs. Also a one burner cooker and a cast iron pot for frying turkey nuggets and morels. That might be a little more than what you would want to haul around but it works great for myself.

Steak, bratwurst, fried or seared duck, pre-cooked pasta for spaghetti, macaroni salad, bag lettuce and pre cooked grilled chicken breasts to name a few. I keep my Coleman two burner stove and a stocked cooler in the truck. I try and prep a day or two before I head out

I'm usually a minimalist living off the tailgate. From my hiking days, I've got one of those little butane canister stoves...works well. Breakfast is simple...cup of coffee and granola bar or such. One meal a day...MREs work great and quite a variety.

Sandwich made up in the motel room for late morning and a restaurant in the afternoon. And of course coffee and a doughnut from the gas station on the way in. I try to keep it simple.

I pre cook something, lately making turkey salad and making a sandwich with it to pack in while hunting.

Make my own trail mix, Carmel M&Ms are a game changer there. RX bars.

Have a grill, I like a hot meal at least once a day, Brats, Italian sausage, steaks and pork chops.  Some red bell peppers.  I generally don't like eating at restaurants and when camping I park where I'm going to camp so I don't have to go anywhere, if I do change spots I park where I can camp again!

except for when I am eating turkey, I live on shin ramen, protein drinks, crackers with (chicken salad, sardines, deli meat, cheese), an apple or banana.

I froze some soup and Italian sausage and stuck them in the cooler when I went to Wyoming sage grouse hunting last fall. When the sausage thawed I cooked it and had a half jar of marinara for spaghetti. The soup I just heated up on my pocket rocket. Burgers and hotdogs are regulars for campfire cooking also.

I do a lot of traveling/camping for my hunting. I cook sometimes but cooking and doing dishes when I am tired can get old.

I'll cook up a bunch of meals that are all together, like spaghetti or casseroles or even stew. Then I put a serving in a vacuum seal bag and freeze them unsealed. Once froze I seal up the bag and put it back in the freezer. When its time to eat I just boil the bag in water to heat it up on a portable stove. No dishes if you use a paper plate or heck, just eat out of the bag if you are really tired.  :)

I'll make up a few days of sandwiches for lunch also. I garden and can too so I have stew, chili, & soup to heat and eat too. Milk in a thermos and cereal can be a good breakfast.

The frozen meals are good for 3 or 4 days in the cooler along with the sandwiches. If I am out longer I switch to the canned meals.

I normally hunt too hard to worry about cooking and cleaning up the aftermath. My sleep is more important to me. Sandwiches, protein bars, canned soup (i.e. Campbell's chunky), canned chili, noodle cups, apples. Quick, easy, minimal clean up. I also probably stop for hot gas station food more than most others in this thread.

Bouncing off the above a little bit, having a well thought out and organized "kitchen" system was a game changer for me. I used to eat almost completely from fast food and gas stations because I hated the prep and cleaning up. Now that I can go from closed truck bed to pot heating up in less than 5 minutes and then can clean up just as quick, I find myself having a lot more motivation to cook a meal. Hot dogs, steaks, pork chops, fresh fish, corn on the cob, green beans, asparagus, broccoli are a handful of staples I go back to as there is little prep and they taste great. Usually get to slide some fried turkey in there as well or will vacuum seal and bring along some turkey noodle soup and cornbread.

If you have a blackstone, the world is your oyster!  Fajitas (breakfast, chicken thighs or turkey).  I have even fried turkey nuggets on my blackstone (shallow oil and flipping them). Omelets, french toast, pancakes, grilled cheese, thin rib eyes or pork chops are awesome, blackened fish.  I like to make patty sausage and egg sandwiches on griddled bread.  You can make biscuits on the griddle. Smash burgers are my favorite and what most everyone requests when camping in the RV-and they are awesome cold the next day.  Clean up is so quick and easy.  Look at some Youtube videos and if you like it, someone has probably cooked it-fast and easy with quick cleanup.

We grab and go in the morning, have our big meal mid day and either eat left overs or light in the evening after roosting birds.
