Title: Box lid question
Post by: pinebark on February 15, 2026, 12:18:22 AM
I have a question for the callmakers here. I bought a Buice box awhile back from a guy that had not hunted it in years. The chalk on the lid to me seems really old and I'm afraid its lost it effectiveness. It's the old blue chalk. This stuff seems to stick to the lid. Just wondering a safe way to remove all of the old chalk and start fresh without damaging the lid. It is a beech lid.
I recall Mr Billy talking about using acetone to clean lids but I didn't want to do anything that would compromise the lid.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260215/92273e442f032e450db777b84c8792b2.jpg)

I have used scotch brite to lightly scuff them before and then wipe the paddle with a clean paper towel.

I would highly recommend this method over using any chemical on your lid.

Not a callmaker.  But have a couple box calls.

I'll "3rd" what Bill and Mike said.  I will, however use a Mr Clean Magic Eraser pad after the Scotch Brite for the difficult ones.

Thanks for the input here. I'll definitely give this a go and see how it works. I was leary about using something too abrasive and changing the backbone of the lid up.

The scotch brite won't be bad for the paddle at all. It's just abrasive enough to get rid of the chalk. the pad won't be to good for much after that though.

Update**
Sanded the call lightly with the scotch Brite. Worked well on removing the old chalk. Lightly hit the body of the call as well just to remove some dings. Seems to have brought the wood back to life. I know he used Deft to coat these calls with so I may have just took a thin layer of that off and renewed it. Will put a good coat of Old Masters wax on it and see how it shines up. Thanks again guys.
Check out that figure in the lid!
This thing will sing now.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260215/b523ddc4635bbc12a9d0b369cf822a5f.jpg)
