Title: 3 inch pots
Post by: redwad on July 18, 2025, 08:49:23 PM
I've been seeing more and more call makers that are selling 3 inch pot calls. I've yet to run one. How do you guys compare them to the normal 3.5 inch pot calls?

I know one of our members makes is copper pots in 3 inch pots and I think that is the only way he makes them. He is well known for his copper pots. Mike Yingling, his name just came to me.

Speaking with John Sinclair a few years ago he said there are certain combinations of wood, soundboard and striking surface he will only do in 3 inch pot as they don't sound right in a three and a half inch pots.  I Know I have one other that is a three inch pot that also sounds good, but I am just waking up and my already defective brain does not start working kinda right for a few more hours.

Absolutely love the more compact size, the ergonomics just work for me. Have enjoyed my yingling copper.

All of my smaller calls are brass or copper.  Great calls by Yingling, Rye and Sinclair.  I have not seen or heard any smaller calls with other surfaces to give you a comparison.

Now that you guys mention Yingling that reminds me that I do have two of his copper pots. They're great. To be more specific, I am looking at Richard Gunn's glass pots. He makes some in a 3 inch persimmon pot. I'm not sure if I want to go with that or a standard 3.5 inch of his.

Brass was one that John Sinclair said her preferred to make in a three inch pot in many woods. I had to talk him into making my pot in three and a half, I have large arthritic hands and do not care for three inch pots as they are painful to hold. They sure do sound nice though.

Maybe just try one in 3 inch if you have not and see if you like the ergonomics.  I'm sure different materials do make a difference w different size calls.  There ain't nothing wrong with the old standard size calls either though, I'll gladly carry one of those too!
