Title: Reasonably Priced Trumpet?
Post by: BDeal on June 09, 2025, 03:56:06 PM
I have never used one and would like to try. I'm only planning on buying one. All suggestions appreciated!

Brian Mero. Affordable, quick turn around and one of the best trumpet makers out there.

Greg Gwaltney, my first and only trumpet, takes a lot of practice to sound good, but found his easy to play for a beginner.  https://gwaltneygamecalls.com/

Jeremy Simpson makes a good one. Believe he's around $150 for a wood call.

I would suggest hitting up Ben Gentry, Seminole Yelpers. He just made one for me, ABW. It is extremely easy to run and sounds 100% turkey. Reasonably priced and turn around was only a few weeks.

define reasonable.  To me its a few hundred dollars.  Somebody else, it might be a $1000...another it might be a 100 bucks.  Go to Helen and attend Unicoi next year.

What is your definition of reasonable? Brian Mero is a great builder, as is Lee Chadwick. Most builders with reputation have it for a reason.

I'm a fan of Delrin trumpets for their sound and durability and I own a few from well known makers.

I recently picked up one of Anthony Ellis(AGE)Simple Hen Delrin trumpets and it is a gem. Has the same internals as his XT model. He keeps some in stock and I received mine in about a week. ~$200

Also, these guys have hit the nail on the head with mentions of Mero, Chadwick, and a trip to Unicoi!

Doug Morgan makes a fine trumpet. They're very reasonably priced. Matter of fact, I've told him on more than one occasion that he ain't charging enough for em.

A  couple that I don't believe have been mentioned in your price range would be Todd Black and Clay Townsend's all delrin call.

In 2019, I bought a yelper directly from Mr. Billy Buice, off his table at Unicoi. I gave $195 for that call. That man has been building them longer than any other builder around. I would think about that real strong before paying equal to some of these builders who have "popped up" over the past 5 to 6 years.

That was going on 7 years ago, and those days are over now. You're not getting a Buice for anywhere near 195 anymore. And some of the newer makers are just as good. Ask Mr.B what he thinks of Seth Hamon, for example.

Just got a Seth Hamon trumpet, it is equal in playability and sound to the best playing trumpet I have tried to date, which is a MKW trumpet.

It may just be his internals match my air draw, which is why it don't hurt to try different makers.

Of course I haven't tried every call makers yelper

No offense to either you or this Mr. Hamon, but I'll take over 50yrs experience all day long, over the latest flavor of the month. I will say this though, it doesn't take an exspensive yelper, bone or wood, to call up turkeys.
