pftt.  Leave the entire sign off the picture if secrecy intended. Just showing South Dakota is the dreaded spot burn to many.  Enough clues in that picture that anyone with basic computer skills could figure the spot out fairly easily I'm betting.

If it's private, can we name the state? :TooFunny:  :TooFunny:
My first Kentucky bird.  I hope to go back, I liked it.

Private may be ok. I was once given grief on this forum when I suggested someone look to the Daniel Boone NF. No matter it is a million or so acres, runs the entire length of the eastern part of the state through multiple counties. Still shaking my head over that one.
That is a nice bird btw. Both of them.  Congratulations.

I don't know if it works on pics hosted on another site then posted on a forum but; if location services are not disabled on your phone or a GPS equipped camera the exact GPS coordinates are embedded in the EXIF data of the picture. FWIW

Bottom line is that they're aren't really any super secret public land spots anymore. Some take a little more work to decipher for those inclined to do so but all are doable.  OnX and similar applications changed the whole game.

LOL.

As if anyone with a smartphone can't access the harvest numbers, success rates, average # days hunted and overall hunter satisfaction for each public area within said state.

Been my contention for years.  The biggest spot burners are the state's themselves.

Should would suck to be a local there, and have to hunt behind that sign next year.

So is it the general consensus of this board that it's not a legitimate hunt if the bird is killed on private land?
Title: Re: How to properly post a picture showing off your non-resident success.
Post by: joey46 on May 11, 2025, 10:51:08 PM
No.  I doubt if half of the successful kill reports even mention if private or public. Given the choice most will go private every time.

Add - just a IMO but that sign in the picture hasn't been there long   No rust on the t-post and no bullet holes in the sign.  Another locational clue.  Almost as good as a pirate's treasure map with X marks the spot.  lol.

The info being out there was not a drop in the bucket compared to what social media pimping did at a rapid pace.

Doesn't matter as long as they have their entertainment!  Those that can do and those that can't watch....

A faster pace yes. The best information available no.  A state's web site normally has all the correct information anyone would need for all it's public land.

BTW - that quote is usually "those that can do - do, those that can't do - teach".  Lots of "teaching moments" in some social media along with the spot burning.  In the old days one would buy casette tapes or videos to learn calling or techniques.  Now you just YouTube it.

How true! Back in the 1970's our Game and Fish Department put an article in their monthly magazine about spring gobbler hunting and named one very specific canyon as a hotspot. That canyon, which we had hunted up to that time, has never been the same since. To this day, there are more turkey-hunter camps in that canyon than anywhere else in the entire mountain range.

I get it. G&F thought they were being helpful to folks who might want to try spring gobbler hunting...which was a relatively new game at that time. They had no clue as to what the repercussions of that article would be...even fifty-plus years later.

Of course, the problem has been exacerbated ten-fold over the years with other media sources, but state game agencies, despite their good intentions, definitely don't help matters.  ::)

lol no. That is not how you do it...

Remain vague and have fun.

Now you've told them the state and the habitat type. Now anyone driving around looking for a place to hunt turkeys can recognize the sign and KNOW it's worth it to hunt there.

Of course not it shouldn't be at least. Turkeys are Turkeys public or private. Turkeys dont even know the boundaries, they go back and forth between public and private all the time, they're terrible readers.

Yeah. And you dont need a study to know a turkeys being hunted by something 365 days and nights a year either.

Something is always trying to eat them. But they will certainly move quite a bit during Spring following their girlfriends and finding new ones when their hens quit breeding.

But if you know where they're moving to based on your studies you might be able to get there before those darned fan boys get your bird or get in your spot again especially since you said one of them was fat.
