Title: Strutter decoy for Wyoming mountain turkeys?
Post by: mnhunter2 on May 03, 2025, 11:05:36 AM
Going to NE Wyoming and was wondering how these birds react to a strutter decoy, birds we saw last year where small groups with a dominant tom or two with them?

Hunted near Devil's Tower in 2022.  I didn't take my usual Funky Chicken and don't remember seeing anyone with any decoys.  It was run and gun hunting like the old days .  Wish I was going with you.  Good luck 🤞

Add - in the situation you describe if decoying we'd use an aggressive Jake not a full strutter.  Actually I sold my full strutter big decoys several years ago. We thought they intimidated as many as they brought in.

I wouldn't be anywhere near one. It's still legal to use high powered rifles during spring turkey season in Wyoming, and I know plenty that do. Sitting anywhere close to a full strut decoy while guys lob 1000 yard shots to test out their new gun, doesn't seem fun to me!

Good point.  Rifles still legal on Florida private and it can be a concern if a trespasser may be around.

Based on the number of people I saw hunting in Wyoming last week, in places I've never seen other hunters before, I wouldn't dream of taking a strutter decoy out there.  The pressure is continuing to grow and some unfortunately have no sense of courtesy so I'd assume the same for safety.

Jeez!  And I bet some will still try and reap or fan.  A little off topic but still consider that suicidal.
