Title: Diaphragm recommendation
Post by: RutnNStrutn on April 23, 2025, 05:20:42 PM
I've found that standard size diaphragms are difficult for me to use due to their size, so I use youth or junior size. I haven't found many places that make them though.
I used Hooks calls for years, but my last order (after Scott died) didn't sound the same, and weren't as easy to use. Before Hooks I used HS Strut diaphragms.
So I'm looking for a company that makes diaphragms for people who have a small pallet, that are easy to blow and will make all the turkey sounds.
Your recommendations?
Go!!! :icon_thumright:
:thanks:

Very easy to run.
Very realistic.
Not very expensive...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250423/4397fa59ce3dedec84ce6ee7e77714cb.jpg)

Woodhaven makes a line of smaller mouth calls. They are really good. Check them out.

Gooserbat on here makes some great sounding calls. I have used the OSS for a couple of years now.

I have to use youth frame calls as well. Before I started building my own around 8 yrs ago, I bought from Hooks, Houndstooth, and Legacy.

Some of the ones mentioned don't build youth frame calls, which is what the OP is looking for.

I also do not like full size calls. I have to trim.every call i get. With that said Gooserbat is all I use anymore. He has a little different shape. I think they are narrower and I do not have to trim.them at all.
Great selection as well.

Pacific Custom Calls have a line of small frame calls. I don't use the small frames, but they have them. Their batwing is one of my favorites right now.

Sadler makes some Great calls with 5 different stretches.  And I would recommend Kluk Custom Calls that make their calls in 3 different stretches.  I have found that the lower stretch calls, for me, give me the BEST control for the soft stuff but I can still crank it up if I need to.  Since I am a center air flow guy, Kluk has a Modified Ghost cut called the Crying Karen that is awesome IMO and the turkeys like it as well.  If you have a call that fits your palate, use that call as a template and trim any call tape to fit that particular call.  Some people actually like to run calls with No tape, just the frame but I haven't gone there yet.

None better for the price, and fairly small framed. Pure turkey

Not a super popular company in the turkey world but I use Phelps game calls "the black bat". They are smaller fitting than my woodhaven calls and easier for me to run.

Gooserbat's calls will work for you. The tape is trimmed much differently from your typical mouth call and is more compact. I run the BGS most days of the season

I suck at using a mouth call but Gooserbat, Primos, and Quaker Boy is what I have used successfully. I have the same problem you do but the Primos Limbhanger fits me good. I still sound like crap but sometimes the turkeys like it.

I have a small pallet myself ... and have found that gooserbats tape is already trimmed narrow which I appreciate . I've been using his diaphragms for about 10 years now . And basically exclusively for the last 4 or so. I'm not a huge diaphragm user , I use them to finish birds but I don't run the woods using a diaphragm everywhere like many people do now days , so my language of use with one is simple... but as far as the fit ... they fit my mouth perfect. I know the frame of the call is not a youth frame .... Basically it's just a pre trimmed call. But like I said , I legitimately have a small pallet, my dentist has told me "you don't have a full grown pallet"... and gooserbat works for me . The Tom swatter is all I use ... I prefer a batwing personally .

Jimbo,
I have the same issue and Hooks was my go to as well. Cane Creek was another.  I've always trimmed my tape to that Hooks tape. It had a great fit for me.

Kluk is now my go to I like that you can choose different stretches in low medium or high. My favorites are there Raspy Hen Crazy Karen and the Smoke Phase 2.in low or medium stretch.
