Title: Mexican slams complete
Post by: neal on April 01, 2025, 08:59:04 PM
Wife and I traveled down to Tamaulipas, Mexico this last weekend to finish up our Mexican slams. Wife needed one and I was hoping for two but would've be very happy with one. We were met with heavy heavy rains think they said 17" was the total. Washed out roads bridges and ranches were flooded it was a mess, first day had birds coming but couldn't get to us never did see a bird. 2nd day we walked through more mud than I care to and got close to them but 56 yds was as close as they would come and that was the only thing positive to happen that day. 3rd day they didn't say boo when they hit the ground just vanished. But good news was water was going down enough to access another ranch but it took some work, had to find a moped to rent from someone in town, walk it across the flooded bridge then ride in 5 miles on washed out roads with mud holes. I about went down once but kept it upright. Got to a spot set up at 230 and by 405 I called in a Jake 5 hens and 2 gobblers I was able to shoot both completing 2 Mexican slams all is great!? Well now I've got 40 pounds of turkeys to haul out on my moped. Got stuck in a mud hole but slowly made the very uncomfortable ride out. But to my surprise I stopped to shut the ranch gate and got a text from my wife saying she just called up a Jake and a gobbler and she tagged the gobbler! All done by 5 with plenty of daylight and time to haul mine out and get pics and the birds cleaned up. Absolutely an amazing time with an outfitter I'd go with again tomorrow, and I will be hunting there again. It's way too fun not to.

Congrats on the adventure!!  A turkey moped brings back some great memories.  35yrs ago, I became a mobile outdoorsmen thanks to my moped at 14.  That thing packed upland birds(my dog would sit on the floor), small game, turkeys, fish, you name it.  It was a 10min ride to school or over an hour bus ride(last kid off)....You just threw on the carhardts and gritted your teeth in Jan/Feb.

Any concerns with traveling into Mexico?  With the current state of things I'd be a little leery I think.  This obviously wasn't your first trip.

Appreciate all the kind words! It was certainly an adventure! Which keeps me going back for more.

No travel concerns whatsoever, I've been on vacation and hunting several Mexican states sometimes 3 times a year. Mexico City is the only place I'd avoid if possible. But I also avoid Chicago, NY and LA.
