Title: Inexpensive trumpet, Jordan or wingbone suggestions
Post by: cannonball on March 31, 2025, 11:54:05 PM
My nephew has been fascinated with trumpets since he started hunting with me a couple years ago and that's what I typically use. I want to get him one as a gift but don't want to spend that much on it, he's still young and might not stick with turkey hunting long term. I'm looking for suggestions on a trumpet, Jordan yelper or wingbone call. I just placed a WTB in the classifieds but would appreciate additional suggestions. I was hoping to keep it under $75 but would pay more if a good deal came up.

There is a Lee Steed cane yelper I'd snatch up quick in classifieds now.

I saw that one. How durable are Lee's cane calls?

I don't know, about as durable as any other I'd say.    Definitely not as durable as the permar improved Jordan.  But sound is 100% turkey

Ralph has a list, I've been on it for a trumpet for a few months now. I need something before April 12th when season starts.

I have known Brian for years and just got two trumpets from him last month. His going rate is $150 and would be my first choice if I were looking to spend that much.

I texted him about the improved Jordan and he said they were sold out, but he would put me on the list.  A week later he said he had some made up, this was March 20th.

For under 75 I would jump on that Steed yelper. You're not going to find much at that price point.

FTC game calls offers a very nice red cedar trumpet for $50. I bought one because I was curious how effective cedar would be in a trumpet. I'm very impressed. Very good quality and runs well. He has a website.

Clay Townsend makes a yelper that's cheaper and readily available now. I saw one for sale here but I believe he has them on hand via his website.

I bought the Lee Steed cane call that was in the classified. Then I had another forum member offer a Permar Jordan for a good price so I bought that one too. I'll probably give my nephew the Permar and keep the Lee Steed call for my collection. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Reach out to Brian Lawter @ Fatal Attraction calls.  He makes a fine horn for $85.  He has a Facebook page.

Yup, I agree. I ran his little blackwood yelper last year in Nashville and was impressed with it.

X3 on Brian Lawter's trumpets. I have two and they sound really good.
