Title: Paul Hicks Cedar Red Slate over Glass striker?
Post by: bbcoach on March 27, 2025, 06:37:57 PM
I've got a beautiful Cedar pot from Paul, as stated above, that I can't seem to get a good sound from trying multiple strikers.  The pot is fine.  Probably my ear but I've tried a JLH Frogwood, Dymondwood, JLH Purpleheart, a Birch laminate and a few others but can't hit that sound I'm looking for.  Does anybody have Paul's Cedar Red Slate and what striker gets it going?

JLH heavy hickory or Lyman hickory are my go to strikers. Love that call!

Well Gentlemen Thanks for the replies.  I must have gone tone deaf because after a day or two off from practicing, I found a Halloran 2 piece Dymondwood that sounds good on this call and does it justice.  This call is a Great call and needs some Love in the Woods.  Take this from me, if a call isn't giving you what you think it should put it on the shelf for a few days and come back to it, you may be pleasantly surprised.  Thanks again.

I was surprised at the first post.  I have this pot and it's one of my favorites.

My son and I have this call and both have had good success with Neal Hermann dymondwood strikers. They sound really good on this call to me. Better than other strikers I have that were much more expensive. I wish Paul was still making calls

A two piece dymondwood with a black "D2"peg that Paul sent with the call is still one of best for me.

Just wanted to update you guys.  It was me totally.  I've been practicing, just about every day, since January, with 6 pots and a couple of different mouth calls and my ears needed a rest.  After I posted this, I've taken a few days off, picked out a nice 2 piece Dymond wood and everything is A OK.  Paul's call will definitely get some LOVE this Spring.  Just a reminder to everyone, don't be an idiot like me and practice so much your ears need a rest.  Also, give every call you have ample time to prove itself before relegating it to a shelf to collect dust.  I need a few birds to give me some feedback.  Come on 12th of April!  Thanks.

Same here. Paul is one of my favorite call makers.
