The short, is there anyway to get the grains to come back out once sanded smooth?
The long. Got a 2 yr old that is my right hand. I mean he's with me doing everything. Even knows how to jig for crappie already, seriously. And he helped me sand the smoker last weekend because he likes to help, this will come up later. I Was roughing up my slates with some sand paper when my phone rang. My lil buddy decided to help out while I was dealing with the situation and grabbed my box call lid which I had unscrewed and set aside and slicked the top pretty good. No biggy, my pappy gave me the call some 30 years ago, so it kind of just goes with me in the spring. I turned around and in my "horror" saw my buddy smiling and holding up both the paddle and sand paper.
"Daddy, I help" and now I'm wondering if there's anyway to get the grooves back in the call. I'll have to give him credit, he's mastered the sand paper.
It ain't the end of the world and if it sits on the display case until it gets chucked it'll be ok as there will always be a story. But I'm kind of fund of it lol.

I can't help you with conditioning a box call, but thanks for that story. Had me grinnin' from ear to ear. You are blessed!!!
Can't get mad at that helper! Great story
It just goes to show that we need to understand that even if we think they're not paying attention you find out quick they mimic your every move. You'll have a great son, friend and hunting buddy down the road. Congrats
This same situation happened to me. I sent the call to box call maker, he fixed it up for me..
Alcohol preps; no sandpaper on paddle or rails. You can not put wood back once removed.
