They both look good. I don't care what a box looks like as long as it has the sound that I like jmo.

All things being equal in sound, I'd probably lean toward the slotted side for aesthetics.
Bur sound is NUMERO UNO. And your tuning is always spot-on !!

X2
Sound is MOST important
My personal preference is the smooth sides
both look good!
As for the calls they both look good, but I could care less how they look, it's how they sound that matters to me...
Sounds trumps everything else for me, but I do like the slotted slightly better.
I like them both, does one way tune easier for you?

I believe the slotted call tunes a bit easier.

Anything coming out of your shop is spot on. Rest is aesthetics. But in my opinion I like the look of the smooth sided box. Sure shows off the beauty of the wood grain.
I like them both. Like someone said, the smooth call shows the wood grain a little better. I have 2 box calls. One is smooth and the other is checkered. The checkered call seems to have a little more "grip" to it when I'm wearing gloves. The slotted might give it a little more "grip" with gloves.

I like smooth sides unless the maker has a reason for otherwise.
For example I much prefer Dawkins smooth sided boxes to his earlier checkered and his later groove sided boxes.
I also like Lamar's smooth boxes a lot (his checks ain't bad either however 🤣) but he told me they were more difficult to make so he doesn't make very many anymore.
I do like the look of your grooved boxes and if you can tune them better than that's a good enough reason to make them that way.
Old fashioned guy here. I like the classic, old checkered box calls from strictly cosmetic standpoint. Like many people have said, it is the sound at the end of the day.
I like the plain sides assuming they sound the same.
Thanks guys for all the replies! I better start making both styles, which I'm happy to do.
Smooth
As I have aged I like the simple things in life, smooth sides for me!
I like how the smooth side shows off the grain of the wood but could see how the slotted side can offer better grip especially on a cold day.
