Who has a Halloran long box, do you prefer Ebony or Ipe. How does it compare to known custom long box makers.

If you can find one of his IPE black Limba I suggest you buy it ... It's really good and plays with the best of them.IMO
I just like the tone and pitch of the IPE black Limba over the Ebony... But I did hand pick the one I got from several he had at the NWTF Convention ...

I have an IPE black limba longbox from David. I carry it every hunt and I highly recommend
I have both of them and there both really good long boxes. Both are easy to run and sound great. I killed two birds with the Ebony and black limba last year and wanted the IPE Black limba. I got on a waiting list and after a long wait finally got mine. It doesn't disappoint and I'm looking forward to using it this season. I think it's a personal preference on which one you like, depending on the tone you like to hear. David makes some really nice calls and they are both top notch. I'm glad I have both of them. I won't leave home without at least one of them any time I'm out hunting.
Ipe/Blk Limba, sounds great and very easy to run, I highly recommend it.
I ended up getting one of his ipe/limba box. I like it, will definitely be getting some use this year.
I have the Ebony/Limba and really like it. Sounds great and has the best kee kees of any long box I have.
I just received the ipe and black limba. Like some have said - best kee-kee's for sure. Will shake the window panes. Everything is a trade off. It will get nasty with ease and yank a gobble from 1/2-mile away, but the lid is springless. You will have a rough time getting it to do anything soft if that is your thing or like me you prefer to call a bird from start to trigger with the same box.

I have found with the proper hand placement and pressure as well as shorter strokes in the correct spot of the rail you can quiet it down substantially. But as you said the box is overall pretty loud probably a lot to do with the heavy lid that is on it.

Halloran makes a good box but I tend to like the custom makers and a cedar lid. I have an easier time keeping it soft with the lighter lid. Kee Kees are great and you can get loud when you need it. Just my opinion.
I used one this season and loved it like its size , not to big. Sounds high pitched and raspy. Easy to play. The case is well made.
