Seen enough feedback here that I got on his wait list. I'm digging the idea of a red slate but if you could only have one (probably ordering two but for the sake of it) which one of his calls would you get?
Also, I'm intrigued by the double sided calls. Is it always slate on slate? Guessing the small side is for tree talking?
I had his crystal/carbon in clear acrylic pot and it was killer.
I have a slate, a glass, and a ceramic. All 3 are awesome but that ceramic has a next level sound to my ear.
Chuck
Always looking for different
Can someone enlighten me on where to look into Busters calls ....
TIA
I have one of his red slate persimmons that he seems known for. Pair it up with a JLH frog and whew. I know they are good buddies...You'd swear they were made to run together.
I found Buster on Facebook and sent him a message.
I am not sure with Buster but generally speaking two sided calls are not always slate and slate, as a matter of fact I have seen very few slate and slate, normally what I have seen is like a Crystal/Slate, Aluminum/Slate, Glass/Slate or so on. Basically a louder main surface and then the slate under for a more mellow sounds. He may well do it differently though.
I've got his acrylic crystal/cf, persimmon red slate and ceramic mahoe. All 3 play fantastic and it's a matter of what the bird wants to hear that day

Persimmon/red slate or Osage / glass both proven killers by me.....
Ceramic / mahoe pot, Glass / green slate Bolivian Rosewood, Red Slate / Persimmon pot, Glass / red Slate Hormigo pot, Slate / glass Walnut pot, Purple slate / glass and purple slate back - 2 sider, Crystal / slate Hormigo pot, Ceramic / acrylic pot, Anodized Aluminum / slate Hormigo pot - 2 sider, Glass / aluminum Hormigo pot
Hormigo wood is a rare wood and musical grade
Buster makes some awesome pot calls ....
Looks like I'll definitely be requesting a red slate in persimmon.
I have a clear acrylic with glass over slate from Buster. It's a VERY good call.
Ceramic, Red Slate
I have had and sold a few of his calls over the years. My favorites are the persimmon pot green slate over glass, Osage pot glass over slate and an acrylic pot stoned aluminum over glass. But my most favorite is a bloodwood glass over slate. I gave my brother a Christmas present a few years ago ..... a canarywood pot green slate over glass. That pot alone I believe has 8 dead gobblers to its credit.
How long is his wait list? I can't get another call til next year so if it is shorter than that I will hold off. Thanks.
I ordered my red slate persimmon a couple months ago and had it within a week or 2.
I have around 10 from Buster all are smokers. Definitely a persimmon red slate, acrylic crystal/carbon hormigo glass over slate and the walnut ceramic is the best ceramic I own.

I've got a Blue Mahoe Ceramic and an Osage Glass over slate double-sider with a small slate in the back - they're both killers and I usually carry one or the other when I head out in the morning.

Just saw this, thank you.
I love his stoned aluminum 2 sider pots.

Idk guys. If I'm carrying a slate call it's been a Busters slate but I'm not on the red slate train. I've got both. The green is better imo. Not even close to my ear.

That quarter sawn persimmon/ red slate is what started it all, but honestly, everything he makes is killer. Heck of a good guy too!!!
He has a new one called Old Hen it's supposed to be a killer of a call

It's a slate not sure the soundboard. I do have one on order from him.
He has it one is fb page Buster's custom calls.
There is a few people that have one they say it's the real deal.
Unfortunately I haven't heard a sound file on it.
I got a red slate from him a little bit ago and it is absolutely dynamite!! Can't wait to take it hunting. Plays easy and is slap full of turkey!!! You won't be disappointed
I have several of his calls. I don't like Buster. You can only tote so many pots in the vest and he has caused me to much "stress" deciding which ones that are going for the ride...lol
I have an old hen on order as well! I've heard great things and can't wait to get it.
I got one of the first handful of old hens last year. It went on every hunt with me. Incredible hunting call that won't win any competitions but will kill turkeys more effectively. Deeper, mellow, a little bit hollow sound. Makes good Jake yelps toward the middle of the pot. I can't say enough about it. It's probably my favorite pot. Got a figured walnut green slate from him this year that I absolutely love, as well. I have several of his pots, and they're all as good as it gets, IMO.
Buster is as genuine, humble, and kind as anyone you'll find.

Busters stuff is legit....but even a nicer guy personally actually got some stuff coming in the next few days I'm pretty excited about....though it'll be hard to get away from his red slate and a crystal....the old hen may make me carry that though
I got a orange agate pot with a red slate this past winter & you talking about a KILLER. Done in my vest, just waiting for season to open. I have one of his 2 siders. Glass over slate and it sounds absolutely awesome. Got to get it in the woods as well.
I have about 6 from Buster and an old hen coming soon. Great calls
I had the pleasure/misfortune to hold a crystal/carbon fiber in Katalox pot this week. No idea how it sounded but that was about the purtiest turkey call I've ever seen. It was sent to me by mistake and all I did was open the box and pull it out..at that time I discovered the error. I've got to get one of those if it sounds half as good as it looks!

I can assure you that they sound even better than they look. His "Old Hen" is now my favorite pot I've ever owned.

An Old Hen is what was supposed to have been in that box. He accidentally put the wrong address on 2 of the calls. I'm not upset; I felt bad for him. To be honest; I didn't expect him to get my call made that quick anyway. I contacted him and we should have everything going right now.
His Osage Glass over Slate was demise of a couple of TN gobblers this year. I also have his crystal over carbon and Persimmon Red Slate over Glass. It gets hard to pick the ones to put in my vest.I am also waiting for one of his Old Hens.
Is there a place to look at his different offerings? Maybe a price list? I'm trying to decide on a new gray slate. Right now it looks like it's between Buster's and Lights Out.

I'm pretty sure there isn't. I have had good luck contacting him on Facebook.
Thanks, I got him on Facebook last night. I'm leaning towards the Lights Out. Great reviews on them for half the price.
Do you have a website for the lights out?

He (Wendell) always has some on Ebay and they are nice. Some go for really good buys. I would not hesitate to take either Wendell's (Light's Out) or Buster's to the woods.
If I was going to get an call from Buster - one could not go wrong with either the Green or Red slate in the persimmon pot (probably just in my head, but I prefer the green personally). BUT - I am hearing an awful lot of good about this Old Hen pot he is now building. Have not ran one yet but will most likely do so at Unicoi next January God willing.
Sorry I got tied up, Wendell's website is lightsoutcalls.com. He shows slate calls from $50-$65 depending on wood type and slate color.
I have several of Wendell's calls and they are great calls.
buster recently made a pot for my uncle in a sappy katalox....crystal over glass unbelievable looking and sounding hes a first class guy for sure

Thank You!!
He sells calls on eBay under metamorphosis_custom_woodworks. Has about 5 or 6 different styles on there now
From Buster I have:
red slate/persimmon
glass/slate/osage
purple slate/canarywood
ceramic/glass/mahoe
crystal/aluminum/bocote
crystal/slate/tulipwood
Next up from him will be his Old Hen!

Got my NY bird opening morning using my red slate/persimmon Buster call. Hoping to fill my last tag using the bow and the same call.

I already had the red slate. Just received the old hen. What striker are you using with it? It seems to be a little more fussy with strikers than the red slate. Thanks!!
I think most guys that have one use a granadilla made by JLH
