Title: Who makes the quietest camo?
Post by: Canadian on May 19, 2023, 06:52:15 PM
Well, theres nothing that annoys me more, than adjusting my hat, and missing a distant gobble thanks to the 'swishing' sound of my moving shirt sleeve. Or walking with the faint sound of 'swishing' coming from my pants.

Ive tried north mountains leafy gear, and decided that i simply prefer standard camo tops such as button ups, vests, and sweaters. Especially in thickets and briars...  So, who makes the quietest non-leafy shirt and pant? I tried a pair of Ol' tom lightweight pants in oldschool green, and although i like the performance of the pant, it falls short in the 'silence' department. I also tried two lightweight shirts i found in a liquidation store, in bottomland/obsession, which are also too noisy. Ill also note that my standards are pretty high here. The shirts/pants really arent that bad... But im looking for extremes. You know when youre listening to the wind for very faint gobbles, and you 'almost' hear the gobble on the wind rather than an audible sound? I missed two of those on a hunt a week ago with a buddy, because i went to adjust my hat, or look through my binos. Both times, all i could here were my sleeves moving.

Anyways, i absolutely love my MO tibbee pants, and find them to be the quietest of the pants ive tried. Are the tibbee shirts equally as quiet? What have u guys found to be the quietest gear for shirts/pants. Thanks in advance, hope to hear some opinions.

 Ole Tom, Drake.

Today, I stopped, took out a diagram call still in original hard plastic pack and rapped a leaf around it and place it back in the plastic pack.

I can not deal with any noise.

I understand this issue completely. Tops aren't too hard to find. I prefer Merino Wool myself. Good pants that fit well, have the features I want, and that are quiet is another matter entirely. Browning Wasatch or something like that was my go-to for a while, but after a year or two, I was blowing the crotch out of them. Have a pair of banded midweight turkey pants that I love, other than the noisy material. The old Tom pants look to be about the same idea, and the materials seem to be just as noisy, so I passed on them. Plus, here in the mountains, I like something a little heavier. Morning can be anywhere for 30-50 degrees out. I did see some Natural Gear pants that seemed to be made of a heavy cotton that I almost bought. Only cost about $45.00 or so. So yeah, if someone comes it with something like the banded midweight tactical turkey pants with a heavier and quiet material. I will be all over it. Until then, I will keep looking. I'm not a huge fan of Mossy Oaks clothes as they are cheaply made and don't fit very well.

Is ol toms tops the same material as their lightweight pants? Also, ive actually had really good luck (so far) with mossy oaks tibbee pants, as far as fit, breathability, and silence go. Durability? Not 100% sure, but they survived some really tough hunting in Mississippi this year, and ive crawled probably close to a half mile in them total. What about sitka's equinox pant? They are preposterously expensive, but like the sound of their insect shielding technology, and are supposedly silent. Treated all my clothes with permetherin this year and still got 3 ticks on me. Maybe the extra protection is worth it? I have multiple friends with chronic lyme disease thanks to ticks, so i hate em... I lived with a friend who had to deal with the disease so ive seen the effects of it first hand... Im not interested in getting it lol...

Generally i prefer lightweight gear with merino wool layering. But im not opposed to something slightly heavier... Fading camo is a pet peeve of mine aswell... Maybe I'm too picky and nothing out there exists for me yet? Lol!

You likely won't like the price tag but for turkey my kuiu katana rank as my top pick for everything you look in a turkey pant. Quiet yet super durable, water resistant but if they soak out dry incredibly fast, they have vents on the hips that really help cover a large temperature range.

They are pretty athletic fitted, not sitka skinny jeans but more fitted than my first lite pant layers.

Is the material itself breathable, or does the breathability only come from the vents? Ive found that with 'waterproof' gear, it lacks breathability. Gore tex is probably the best for breathable waterproofing, but even it falls short of some non-waterproof, which is obviously expected.

Natural gear makes a spring pattern pants and shirt that are quite.
I wear kuiu pants almost daily to work and hunt , absolutely the best pants I've found .
Very durable, quiet, and breath well .

Not a waterproof pants, just a dwr treated dense weave pant that doesn't absorb moisture the way cotton of fleece would. Very breathable with and without the vents open.

Awesome!! Love the sound of those! Im not partial to any specific brand or camo like some people are. I just want what performs best.

Also what about for shirts that you guys recommended for comfort and silence?

Since no one has responded. Personally, I like merino wool shirts and jackets. Banded, first lite, Duckcamp, and Sitka are a few of the companies that make them. A bit pricy, but they are worth it, in my opinion. Fleece is a close second.

I have a set of Columbia fleece for when it is cool, very quiet. I also have 1/2 dozen pairs of wrangler cotton double face camo jeans that stand up to the briars very well and quiet. I wear a lot of cotton when it is warm.
I also have my share of wool.

What do you use for super lightweight shirts? Isnt merino wool a bit heavy for hot weather? Thanks for the tips tho. Also, do you have any banded shirts? Are they quiet?

They make the merino in different weights. Some of them are quite light. I have some merino list hoodies, some first light jackets and shirts. The banded hoodie I have is pretty light.

After a little washing, most camo will become quieter.  I never have given it much thought, if he can hear or define what my camo sounds like, he's a lot smarter than i give him credit.

Its not him that im worried about. Its me missing a faint, distant gobble, thanks to my swishing shirts, that i want to avoid. Also, thats probably a good tip, as i clean my gear as little as possible in order to prolong pattern sharpness and color. To avoid accelerated fading. Thanks.

IF i miss a gobble it's not the fault of the camo or clothes I'm wearing...  The gobbler was just too far for me to hear ...  99 percent of the time you will stop listen / call or use a locator call in hopes of getting a gobbler to respond. And sooner or later your going to have to wash your camo... I agree that washing your camo is a good tip after the season.  IMO...

I wear old fashioned cotton blend. Never had an issue hearing gobbles

Army Surplus for my pants...  (Although it has been a couple years).  Durable, quiet, comfortable, and affordable.

Camo shirt, with fleece over the top.  Have some Heavy fleece tops if it is really cold that are quiet.

If it it wet, anything that keeps you dry does tend to be more noisy.  I have some bibs with fleece-like coating that does stay dry, and are quiet, but they are also heavy and cumbersome to wear.

Granted I am hunting in California, and for the most part, low temps are in the 40's (which is unusual for turkey hunting) and high temps have been in the 90's on some years (in the afternoon).

I usually wear cotton LS T shirt and cargo pants.  Ol Tom's are my favorite but the ones I have seen to shrunk since last season.  Quiet as clothes come.
But this the south and it's hot.  I bought a pair of Ol Tom Tibee type pants but didn't wear them as we had a cooler than normal most of my season so I didn't try them.  A Tibbee button down shirt is quiet too.
