Title: Comfortable cushion for sitting on the ground?
Post by: noweil on May 14, 2023, 02:17:59 PM
What cushions are you ground sitters using? I am not interested in sitting on cold wet ground without a comfortable cushion. Some days I will sit on the ground for 6 or 8 hours. I found the HS Strut inflatable Bunsaver to be very comfortable but they always leak air after using them a while. I bought one of the Hunt Comfort cushions and it worked well for a couple of seasons. However, it seems to have lost some of the comfort or cushion properties when sitting on it for hours this past season. I bought a small inner tube to try sitting on, but haven't used it yet. Any input on a comfortable cushion is appreciated.

I this isn't a cushion but I've went to low profile chair and it sure makes a difference on those long sits .....

I made my own with 5" high density upholstery foam and some waterproof camo fabric. I (wife) then sewed on some shoulder straps with an adjustable chest buckle strap added......it is dry, comfy, light, quiet. Search on Amazon for the foam and fabric, it has been years since I made mine.

I use the h s strut seat with folding legs. Use my butt pad on top. Keeps me a little elevated and dry.

I am believer...after using for several days this spring...in the inner tube seat made by Ms Glenda Green. That thing has a durable inner tube that does not leak, and it is light to carry and comfortable. I didn't think I'd easily give up my lounger, but this is the answer!

If the inner tube is like everything else she offers it's got to be awesome....

This - you won't be sorry- your butt will thank you !!

My vest has the quick deploy seat that folds under my butt and has straps keep it there. If I sit right in it, it cradles my behind off the ground.

The small storage pouches in the back are enough to stow my rain gear and some snacks and act as support/cushion for my lower back and sits perfectly in the gap created between my lower back and the tree and ground.

The weight is distributed from my back against the tree through my lower back, cushioned by my rain gear, and butt which is raised off the ground and supported by the straps.

If I sit like this my gun resting on my knee is at eye level. Basically at the ready with out much movement. It was a little awkward at 1st but very comfortable now that I'm used to it. Also have a much lower profile than sitting up with the all the weight on my butt

Inner tube, underinflated. You won't do better...
Glenda makes some fabulous stuff. I'm sure, with her cover, a wheelbarrow inner tube couldn't be beat!

The Glenda Green innertube seat is super comfortable - the secret is to run it at about 50-60 percent inflated. I just have not found the perfect way to carry it around in the woods. I presently have it hanging on my belt over my backside by a lightweight carabiner when I am walking. That would not be bad at all if I did not walk very far to hunt, but 5-8 miles later I get tired of it bumping up against my backside every step. The one positive to that is that it has just enough slack in it when attached to my belt to be able to sit down on it without having to unclip it to work a bird.

I guess I could just go back to my turkey vest and carry her seat in the back of the vest, but that would defeat the purpose of having her satchel that I most days use instead. But her seat is pure gold when sitting in it.

If you ask her she will sew a strap on it just like she puts on the satchel and you can carry it over your shoulder,  I carry mine opposite shoulder from the satchel and it works great,

Thanks for the reply, I will get with her when I see her again about that.

She added an extra swivel snap to the flap of my satchel and I snapped it to the flap of the satchel ... On my first old satchel i made myself a lope to go around my strap and i attached it to that small lop i made on the carry strap of the satchel.

Nothing beats the comfort of a turkey chair.  Unfortunately, it is a pain to lug around when you are on the move.  It can also be noisy at time.

X however many we are now on Glenda Green's seat.  I use a carabiner and clip it to my satchel or a belt loop.

I use an inflatable glassing seat. Super light, comfortable and can be deflated/folded up for longer hikes. I put it in my bino harness accessory pocket when not in use, so it has zero effect on mobility when you need to move quickly. Highly recommend it.

I've been using the V Seat from Klymit, because of how small it can be folded up, and it's only $15. I don't run a turkey vest, just a bino harness/chest rig with my calls and gear inside instead of binoculars.. so the portability is big for me.

In the past, I've also tried one from Therm-a-rest that was comfier, and a cut piece of closed-cell foam sleeping pad, which was not. Both just didn't fold up as nicely, the Therm-a-rest deflated was about the size of a Nalgene. The Klymit one can be folded down to a bit bigger than a bar of soap.

If looking for all-day comfort in one spot, there are better ways to go... but for run-and-gun hunters or guys who are only sitting 1-2 hours in one spot and then moving, it works great.

I made my own with some 5" or 6" thick furniture foam (Size it to your own butt) , it is lightweight, comfy, and quiet. I used some waterproof camo fabric sewn around it with 2 shoulder straps(and 1 breast strap) attached. ....works great for me.

I have a fatboy? I think it's called. About 3" thick and I can sit on it for a long time. I'm pretty old and prefer a lounger now but for run and run I like the fatboy. Has a carry strap

I have the Hunt Comfort "FatBoy" seat/cushion and don't think that you can beat it, they have several different styles to choose from, they are on the pricey side but for me well worth it, I have a few.

The only other thing I would say is looking into a Turkey Hunting Lounger.

This is it. Thick foam but doesn't compress too much so it's comfortable

My daughter suprised me this year and said she wanted to go turkey hunting.  Just ordered another Glenda Green.  Her quality never fails to impress.

In my turkey hunting experience, the years have piled up and my run-n-gun days are behind me. In that time, I went from a cushion on the ground to a low turkey chair and finally to a regular lawn chair. Being in my 80s, I now carry a lawn chair via a bungee cord over my shoulder with a decoy sack on my back and a fanny pack with calls, etc. around my waist, all accompanied by a walking stick. A camo net on stakes is also part of the garb. I set up where the gobblers traditional are and wait for them to open up. If there's no gobbles, I typically continue to call periodically and sometimes, especially later in the morning, it's not unusual for a gobbler to answer and, depending on how lonely he is, to eventually come on in. Last year I killed one at noon. Most game can be hunted with a lawn chair and patience, including squirrels, deer, doves, and even rabbits with a pack of beagles. I still enjoy hunting as much as ever by just making the adjustments that life requires of you.

For over 20 years, I've used a camo boat cushion.

I usually take a few and spread them around the farm so that I have one when I get near where I'm going to hunt and then leave it back there as I'm walking out.

It gets me sitting up a tad higher off the ground and puts less pressure on my knees.

TRG3, Whatever it takes to keep you hunting is fine.  When you hit 80, accomodations to the old run and gun style are likely to be needed.  Keep at 'em however you can, as long as you can.  Good luck this spring sir!

After all the positive reviews on this seat, finally ordered one.

Its a game changer. Could sit all morning on it if I had too and not get fidgety.

I use an old Buckwing turkey seat.  It has solid legs and does not fold. It's the type with the longer front legs and shorter rear legs.  I had a folding HS Strut and it fell apart. If I have time I put my cushion on top before sitting down.  This works for me.

For run and gun hunting I have been using a Beard Buster Glassing Chair and a Thermarest seat pad.  The BB Glassing Chair is smaller than the BB EZ Chair, and rolled up with the Thermarest inside it is slightly larger than a Nalgene bottle.  I carry it in a DSD decoy bag along with the decoy.

The back support and extra padding underneath keep me comfortable and still much longer than being without.

However, I do LOVE my Glenda Greene Minimalist Satchel, and may end up giving her inner tube seat a try!

I second the low profile chair. It stinks having to lug it but it's not too bad. The best part is I can sit all day comfortably if I have to and it keeps me from having to shift around. It's definitely worth it.
