Title: Recommendations on 20 Gauge
Post by: RollTideHunt85 on November 09, 2022, 10:59:57 AM
I am looking for recommendations for a 20 gauge with a 22 to 24inch barrel that will not break the bank.

I don't see 20 being much different

Mossberg SA-20 in the turkey model I believe has a 22". Their SA series guns are outsourced to a manufacturer in Turkey and are essentially the exact same gun as the Tri-Star's. I have the Mossberg SA-410 and absolutely love the gun.

Franchi makes their Affinity Elite in a short barrel turkey model as well. It's gonna run closer to a grand though, but would definitely recommend this gun as well. My Affinity Elite Waterfowl in 20 gauge is probably my favorite shotgun I own and I've got a bunch.

I would compare the Mossberg's/Tri-Star's for a lower price point to the Franchi and decide where you want to spend your money. You won't go wrong either way, the Turkish manufactured guns historically have a bad rap, but I've shot the heck out of some Escort's that you wouldn't have any clue it was a $200 semi auto if you weren't in the know.

Pump 870, Moss 500 or Benelli nova.    Benelli Nova what wife has.

Auto we see alot of the tri star and the franchi.    The Retay has been running next.    Now Beretta came out with the A300 in 20 but dont know the $$.

Now Moss, Tri Star, Franchi and Retay is drilled and tap if you plan on red dot.

I will second the mossberg SA-20. Nice gun that handles and shoots well

Remington 870 youth is a sweet little gun as well. LOP does not bother me as it is being shot like a rifle, but you can add  a recoil pad to lengthen.  Set one up for my daughter, but it does not see much action.  I would not hesitate to carry it.

Love my Weatherby SA459, but not sure if those are still in production.

I just picked up a CZ Bobwhite SxS in 20 with 26" barrels and double triggers (no worry about moving safety to shoot the long or short barrel at the moment of truth).  Shot it this past weekend at quail and it is a nice little rig, but mine will be dedicated for turkey.

I found a Benelli Nova 20 gauge 24" barrel at my local GS this spring, I have not hunted with it as of yet but shooting paper it has been very impressive.  It has grip serrations on the pistol grip and forearm that work very well, mine was very reasonable being on the used rack but in excellent condition, you can find them on sale for 399.  Great little shotgun IMO.

I bought a Benelli Nova 24" full coverage Advantage Timber camo 20 ga. a number of years ago. My son killed his first longbeard with it when he was 14 years old. He is now pushing 25. They stopped making the full camo 24" barrel version a while back for some reason but I see they have reintroduced it recently as a turkey gun(same as mine just different camo now). IMO one of the best 20 ga. turkey guns on the market regardless of price.  I had mine drilled and tapped and mounted a Leupold 1x4 VX I shotgun scope on it. Shooting Hevi-Shot "Magnum Blends" 3" with a Hevi-Shot .573 turkey choke.  Deadly combo. Hope you find something you like. Good luck.

I had a tri-star viper in 410 and really liked it.  I will say, I like to shoot with the bead and it did shoot low and to the left considerably.  The customer service was top notch though.  Mailed it to them and they sent it back with a brand new barrel.

I own a SA-20 and it's a killing machine just like it's grand-dad 835. I only had a small issue with it recycling light loads. Seemed like it wanted heavier loads to recycle. I'm talking the low brass 7-8"s you use at shooting matches. I used these to get an aim point before throwing some more expensive loads down range. I read if you take it apart and clean and lube, it will help in some cases. Didn't help in mine! I still love the gun, and would buy again. Good luck.

Mossberg SA 20 or Stoeger line of 20 gauge ...

I have a couple Stevens 20 gauges that won't break the bank. The 301single shot just patterns good with whatever I put in it and I have not shot the 320 (turkey version) yet.

I really like my Stoeger M3020. I ended up putting a pistol grip for the M3000/3500 on it and it works well. It seemed to like specific choke and loads.

My favorite 20 gauge I have is my 870 Fieldmaster compact. 21" barrel, put a Magpul stock on it, rib mounted red dot, and then had it dipped/cerakoted.

Good luck with your choice, plenty of good ones out there.

I say skip all these Turkish shotguns and get yourself an 870 20 ga.10- 20 years from now nobody gonna get warm and fuzzy over a Tristar or made in turkey mossberg, let alone get parts for one. I was just checking out the new RemArms 870 20 ga turkey gun @ my LGS. They are more $$ than ever nowat$400+ but I'd rather keep quality than worry about price point. The "new" version has better front bead and is drilled and tapped at the factory for optics mount. 870s have a bunch of aftermarket parts to customize your gun to your liking as well.

Foe the money the Tristar viper g2 can't be beat. I'll put them up against any remington, mossberg, Weatherby, etc. They run well and kill birds just as dead as the others. I've had one go back for an issue and customer service was outstanding. I currently own 3 of them.
