Title: Ferrells
Post by: tap.emtp on April 17, 2022, 08:33:20 AM
Been making my own ferrells from shells like a lot do but was wondering what you use to cut them ? I cut them on a lathe but only have a wide parting tool which doesn't work very well. Thanks

What type of material are you using for ferrules? Some of the softer metals (Brass, copper) can be cut using standard wood lathe tools, of course it will dull them quickly(and wear them out faster), but can be done. I guess a guy could use a file and sandpaper too, good idea to slow down the turning speed when cutting non-wood pieces. I am far from an expert here, I learned on my own, so maybe someone with more experience will chime in as well.

I think he's saying he's using brass casings.

Yes, I use brass casings. Some antler also but prefer the look of brass. Does someone make and sell ferrules? Thanks

I've never found anything that works better than a hacksaw blade, and I've cut a few in the last 20 years.

Don't know if it'll help with search terms but the word is ferrule. Ferrules.

Harbor freight mini cutter. Most 3oo blackout reloaders use it to trim brass. A little harder on the saw trimming near the casing head, but will work fine.
