Title: Our Reps Are On The Line!!
Post by: GobbleNut on March 09, 2022, 10:19:18 PM
For some unknown reason, everybody on the OG forum seems to think I am a gullible old GOAT because I seem to get into these little side challenges every year.  Zelmo1 (Al) from the Roarin' 20's challenged us to a little side bet on which of our two teams does the best in the contest.  He offered one of his famous pot calls and I told him each member of our team would put up $100 bucks as our part of the deal.  Hope that is okay with everybody....

(Not really,...I agreed to make their team a dozen mouth calls if lightning strikes and we lose)

Nonetheless, the situation has now gotten serious and you boyz is gonna have to get your sh*t together and win this thing!  The GOATS! honor has been challenged and deefeets is not acceptable!

If nothing else, I expect everybody to raid their team thread with whatever smack talk comes to mind.  It is high time we teach them a lesson about gettin' all up in the GOATS! faces thinking they can challenge us!  A beat-down is on the menu!  (Don't let me down now fellers...   ;D )

I already got. " Goat Tracker on y'all. Those fellas at onX are very helpful. I never said my calls were any good, lol. I am flattered at the estimated worth, but I sell them only to buy more supplies. It's my hobby, if I had to live on the profit, I would be a lot thinner and shooting lead , lol.

How dead can the turkey be???

I got a bird finishing at the taxi from last year that would have scored 76 and change per the scoring rules if my arithmetic is right.

if it's only maybe dead and it didn't vote for Biden, then it's not too dead,

sign it up on the score card

I like it. I have some birds in the 70s and 80s. We can put an asterisk beside it and call it ghost score.

I'm fine with that.   If 26" of beard is the threshold  I might be able to dig up a decent bird or 5 myself.   I have one that will more than double that beard length.

Beards are purdy and all, but as i get older, I look for long spurred gobblers. I will take a bird with a nice 1.25" busted odd spur any day. It paints a picture of all the title defenses he has made. When they stop tasting so good, I will hunt them with a camera still. Good luck boys. Let the real trash talking begin.

                                                                                                           P.S.

I cant talk too much trash till my season starts in 6 weeks.  :OGturkeyhead:

I'm an equal opportunity turkey hunter.   Full fan, swinging beard, visible spurs.   Meet any of that criteria, and I hate it for them.

Good luck in six weeks.   I guess I'll kick my season off Saturday on a yute hunt.

Things are about to get fired up here shortly and we should soon start to get a clearer picture for both squads.  Luckily, a couple of our boys have already hunted Florida and have gotten us on the board.  I suspect that scoreboard will start lighting up a bit more in the near future!
Good luck to all the members of both teams, as well as all the others out there.
It's time to rock and roll!   :you_rock: :turkey2:

Things are looking up, gentlemens!  Keep up the good work!  At this rate, I may not have to be making all those mouth calls after all!  Congrats to all the latest additions to the team score!   Good to see that the captain's superior skills at keeping the cats herded up is paying dividends!   ;D :angel9: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

I hunted at my cousin's farm the other day and parked by the barn. One of the barn cats followed me through the woods turkey hunting. I actually had a jake come in and he was all caught up in the cat. I should have videoed it.

I hope I can get an upgrade bird before I am done. Going back to Ky for another hunt or two and I have killed some brutes down there. Then SD, but I'm not sure what their birds are like. I had been trying to  hunt only the birds that I knew had been on the farm for a few years and had those deep course gobbles. But they are all henned up and it was killing my season hunting a big score bird. Those big old boys usually don't come until the end of season when they get desperate for hens. So I decided I better just hunt a Gobbler and fill a tag. Yet the way this season has unfolded I may not even fill another tag, but I'll have a ton of fun trying. I told the wife yesterday, it wasn't about the dead birds, it's all about the pursuit. If all I wanted was a turkey to eat, I'd go to the grocery.

Yeah, cat and turkey interaction is interesting to observe.  There was a home in the mountains here where the owners fed the wild turkeys in the area.  They had a cat that would wander around eyeballing the turkeys when they were there.  You could tell by watching it that it was always considering "trying" one of the turkeys,...and they were always eyeballing the cat to see if he was gonna try.  Never saw the cat or the turkeys go after one another, but both always seemed to be contemplating it.  It was a pretty interesting interaction.

I video'ed it one morning for a bit, but that was long ago in the days of VHS.  I'm sure I have the tape with the video somewhere still, but no telling how long it would take me to find it!

I just hope it doesn't cost me to much to get the grill on my truck fixed after season.   I usually try to center them up right in the middle.  But this year they have hit all over the front end.

One of those turkeys you see eating on the side of the road was up on the barn roof this afternoon, was hoping he would stay there tonite so I could have a roosted is roasted experiences, but he flew the coop.

probably wouldn't of been much fun, never heard him gobble even once

All I heard was blah blah blah, I am captain Gobblenut. Anyways I am too good looking to go putting my nose on a grindstone. On a serious note I haven't heard anything from Reflexl in a few weeks. I messaged him about a week ago and no response. Hope it's nothing serious.

First of all, that's captain GobbleNut SIR to you buddy boy!  You may substitute "illustrious potentate" for that if you wanna.   ;D

I think reflexl (Roy) is on the mend based on his communications.  I believe he said he was going back to work today and was planning on hitting the woods again in the next couple of weeks if things went well.  We need him back for sure.  Our smack-talk meter is not nearly as effective when he is not here to keep that motor running at max output!   :D

Ronnie,...before you look it up,...I will point out that I misspelled smanter.  It's supposed to be "schmanter".  ...Don't want you to be any more confused than you  usually are... :toothy9:

Good, glad to hear Roy is ok. I am tied up with work till the weekend and then will be trying to help my boy and a buddy each get a gobbler so don't expect much from me for a bit. I don't expect I will be behind the gun for a while unless one of them tags one early enough for me to get some hunting time.

Keep after them. They can't hide forever. I am just gonna go over and stir things up with the Boring 20 fellows now that I am not able to be in the woods for a while. Just trying to fill in for Reflexl. Our captain seems to be awful encouraging of this behavior yet he seldom participates, must be his naptime. Also I haven't seen our boat recently. He didn't loose it in a poker game did he?

This has been an off year for me. Everyone has one of "those years" every so often and this is mine. Kentucky has been a briar in my heel the last two seasons. From people to uncooperative birds to my dumb mistakes it just hasn't been good. I am losing my drive to hunt very hard. I hope I get a little more motivated by the time I get to South Dakota, but my enthusiasm is waning

The smile on my wifes face and memory is worth forking over a call to GN. She also pulled off the best shot I have ever witnessed on her Tom, WITH MY GUN!!! Good luck and God Bless guys, stay safe. As you say, we all have years when it seems nothing is going right,...and, yes, it is really hard to stay motivated when they come around.  Been there,...Done that!  What I have found is that when I throw in the towel for whatever reason, after the season, I always regret not putting in that extra bit of effort that I should have.  As Happy said, it is a long wait until next season.  Great advice for us to keep in mind and focus on just enjoying this one for what it is,...another chance to do what we love.

Getting philosophical for a moment:  I am at that age where a guy starts to realize,..."Hey, I made the 'round trip' again this year and I have another spring to do this thing I love to do, and the health I need to do it. I only have so many years left to do this, and I should make the best of it, whether the turkeys cooperate or not."  Quite honestly, that is easier said than done.  Age also seems to bring an attitude (for me, at least) that my individual success is less important than the overall experience, but that only goes so far before frustration can set in with that "throw in the towel" attitude.

Ever since I was a youngster, my family always had house cats.  With every one of them, they went from the stage in their younger years of wanting to catch and kill every bird they saw to a late-life stage of just sitting there and watching the birds without going after them.  I always asked myself why they changed with age from being focused killers to being seemingly indifferent to the same prey.  I am beginning to understand the process of how that happens more clearly now. I see it happening with me,...and that is a fairly recent phenomenon.

That's not to say that I necessarily like being at that stage, but it is a reality. Sometimes, to keep hunting hard, I find myself fighting to overcome that "old cat" indifference... :)

I like this quote from Calvin Coolidge, it's in one of Earl Mickel's books

"Persistence...
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

When you're not swavee and deboner like Happy, or have his good looks to fall back on.
Or have a dictator, I mean authoritative commanding personality like Gobble nut,
You can always rely on persistence

I appreciate all the kind words. I have approached this whole season differently than most. I decided I wasn't going to push myself to collapse and total exhaustion. Turkey hunting has been a waning desire for the last three years or so. I enjoy it, but it just isn't driven like it used to be. That is evident in the fact I will not go after birds that require a heavy physical effort. I'll just move on. That became evident in opening day of Kentucky this year. There was a red hot bird across a deep valley and he was all over my calls. My buddy and I knew we had too cross to kill him. My buddy said, he's your bird go get him, but I said "I'll sit here on this log, you go kill him and bring him back and I'll take your picture. I kept the bird gobbling as he crossed then when he called I shut up, he killed the bird (picture attached). Then my old honey holes dried up in Kentucky and Ohio went to one tag and it just added to my malaize. So, don't cry for me gentlemen of Old Gobbler I chose my path and I walk it. A few more gobblers will die along this way, but many more will get a salute and live to gobble another day. I'll be fishing, it's way less stressful. I just regret that my sour season has not aided the team. My one bird is not up to the standards of my past. I usually kill whatever comes to the call, but usually at least one bird is in the mid 60s. Geessh, last year I killed a 77 point bird and a 67+. So I feel bad for my team contributiion.  I have one hunt left in Ky tomorrow and then South Dakota and maybe I can upgrade. Today I am taking my wife's cousin that logs for the family and help him.

When you're not swavee and deboner like Happy, or have his good looks to fall back on.
Or have a dictator, I mean authoritative commanding personality like Gobble nut,
You can always rely on persistence

I am swavee and deboner? That doesn't sound good at all. Hope my wife doesn't find out.

You should just be glad that crow didn't use deboner and dictator in the same sentence.  That is what is known as a dubbel ontaundry,...or something like that...I think...  :newmascot:

I dunno, I have been suspicious that our dictator has been trying to give us deboner for sometime now.

I think our boat sank a couple of months ago,...just a day or two after I was put at the helm.   :toothy9:

. I figured you lost it in a poker game. It's ok, I figured the team was gonna get the short end of the stick on that one so I didn't target any gobblers near large bodies of water.

I thought the Captain was supposed to go down with the ship.  That was the whole purpose of The Floating Goat.   Now we don't have a ship and still have a Captain.

A 2" spur, you pass.   On the gobblermatic scoring gadget you enter each one of those spurs as 2.00 :icon_thumright:

LOL, 2" would be great, but unfortunately thats the centimeter or metric or Celsius side of the tape measure,

in real life it is a 13/16th spur going over the curve.

the guy at the phone store was kind of busy

Thanks Happy,

This is one of "Guess Who's" cane yelpers
My enlarged picture of it with the gobbler kind of distorted it's good looks

This is one fine call in both looks and performance, draws air as easy and sounds as good as any trumpet or yelper I have ran, it is a key Keeing machine.

only call used for this gobbler with a little leaf scratching thrown in at the very end, when I couldn't control myself.

And before anybody pokes fun at my little gobbler, this was a 30lb turkey at the beginning of the season,
I have ran him ragged since opening day, not giving him much chance to eat. Pushed him out of his native swamps and up into the highlands, this is how his 1.75" plus spurs came to be worn down so bad.

At the end he was pushed so high up to where there's not much for a turkey to eat, I cut his crawl open and it was full of grizzly hair and what I took to be some wolverine fur, He was a scrapper.

Yep, Grizzly hair and wolverine fur don't provide much protein.   I wish you could have caught up with him early season.   But then again, it may have been for the best.   He may have had you laid out taking pictures and measurements with that tape.   At least it's a metric tape.

I'm not saying he wore me down, but I'm 27, before the season I  had brown hair and not a wrinkle on me. I was also much better looking than "Happy"

Your turkey may have weighed 45 pounds plucked and may have beaten Bigfoot with one wing. All that was believable up until that point about being better looking. My momma has called me special my whole life. You don't get that honor being average looking. Or that's what I have been told. But hey the picture posting seems to be working now! I wish I had t seen it though.

I passed on another Sabbatical earlier that morning, wasn't sure on the bag limit,
but it ended up being worth it when this gobbler came in.

Okay. fellers, barring some miraculous comeback by the Roaring 20's squad, it looks like ol' Zelmo is going to be sending one of our team members one of his custom pot calls!

Here's the plan:  I am going to put all of our team member's names in a hat and draw the winner of the call and post it in this thread.  I will then need whoever wins the calls to get Al his address and choose a call from the selection he has available.  Al will then mail the chosen call to the winner.

Pay attention now!  I realize that most of us have a really short attention span so don't go disappearing now that the season is pretty much over with!

Oh,...and like Hancock says (refer to the movie)....GOOD JOB!  (and thanks for carrying me along for the win!) ;D :D

And the winner of Zelmo's Custom Pot Call is....  (imagine a drum roll in the background)....

Happy!  (Nick)

Geez fellows. I never win anything. Zelmo many thanks to you and to Jim as well. I think what I will do is use it next year to kill a gobbler and then sign it and pass it on to another team member. Hopefully we can get everyone's signatures on it and it can go back to either Jim or to Zelmo( He was a lot of fun to jaw with this spring as well). We can have a group decision on that so tell me what you think fellas. This has been  a great group of guys to share the spring with. No worries about scores, just laughing and having fun while doing what we do. I think that is what this "competition" should be about. I would have enjoyed it the same if we had come in dead last. Anyways let me know what you think fellas. With all these high profile signatures that call will be worth some big money

I like the way you think Happy (as scary as that sounds).    Fine gesture from Zelmo, followed by Happy.    A couple of true GOATs, well one honorary.  I hope I spelled that right.

Sounds like a great idea, Nick!  I suspect with all of those high-dollar signatures on it, we would probably have to pay someone to take it off our hands, though.   ;D

It has been a great time and lots of fun!  If everybody feels like it, we will look at doing it again next spring!

That's a great idea on the travel call Nick.  I haven't killed a turkey with a pot call in a long time, but could promise to at least hunt with it before passing it on, and live close enough to Zelmo to return it to him in person.
