Title: Cerakoting the barrel?
Post by: Pluffmud on April 17, 2021, 11:36:36 AM
Sitting herenin this beautiful old growth hardwood bottom, mid 60s and sunny, but for some reason the birds wont gobble, so I have time to feel sorry for myself and ponder on things to buy and do for my favorite hobby. Ive been getting my butt whooped sonl bad this season, I rebounded and bought a Retay Gordion Turkey XT. Its fully dipped in bottomland, which I am a snob and would prefer the barrel and receiver be cerakoted. This got me thinking... Since cerakote is baked onto parts in an oven, would cerakoting the barrel change some metallurgy and cause changes in pattern? I see people cerakoting guns often. Wondering if yall have had any experiences in this area.

Had my 870SM receiver and barrel done a few years ago.  Put everything back together after being CeraKote.  I didn't even have to adjust my red dot.

Baking cerekote isn't going to get the metal hot enough hurt the metal.

I've got cerakoted rifle barrels and shotgun barrels and neither have ever affected zero. Guess it's a fairly low temp.

Im going to take this a step further... What about Benellis with Crio technology? They crio freeze the barrel and chokes to improve shot density and patterns. Would not baking a crio barrel/choke have some effect on it?

250 to 300 is a low low temp for that type metal. I really can't see it affecting any type of permanent tempering.
